Pay property tax by October 15 to receive 5% incentive: Chennai Corporation

The Greater Chennai Corporation has requested property tax assessees to pay before October 15 and get a 5% incentive. According to a press release, people can pay the property tax on the Corporation’s website www.chennaicorporation.gov.in, at e-seva counters at zonal and divisional Corporation offices, through hand-held devices of tax collectors, on Namma Chennai and Paytm mobile applications, at select banks and through the Bharat Bill Payment System. During the first half-year of the financial year 2021-22, the civic body has collected a sum of ₹375.59 crore as property tax. A total of ₹225.13 crore of professional tax was collected during the same period. As per the amendment to the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919, assessees who pay during the second half-year of 2021-22 before October 15, will be given 5% incentive up to a maximum limit of ₹5,000. Payments made after October 15 will attract 2% simple interest per annum. During the previous half year of April 2021, a total of 1.16 lakh assessees received incentive. In October 2020, a total of 94,900 assessees availed themselves of the incentive, the release said.

"During the first half of the financial year 2022-2023, the civic body has collected a total of Rs 696.97 crore as property tax. On September 30, the last day to pay the tax, the owners paid a sum of Rs 55.30 crore. Those who pay the property tax within the first 15 days, will be given an incentive amount of 5 per cent or a maximum of Rs 5000," a senior official of the Chennai corporation said. The deadline for paying tax dues for the first half of the financial year was September 30 and a 2 percent simple interest would be added to the dues. The corporation waived the fine last week. Now, the property owners have to pay their second half-yearly property tax for the year 2022-23 from October 1. The property tax can be remitted through the official website www.chennaicorporation.gov.in, without a transaction fee. It can also be paid through the selected banks, Paytm, Namma Chennai mobile applications, and Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS). Besides, cheques and drafts in the name of the Revenue Officer, Chennai Corporation and credit or debit cards can also be used to pay it, the corporation said. The civic authorities recently announced that the GCC has generated more than Rs 1000 crore in the form of various taxes during the first half of this financial year.
