Mumbai: Former Maharashtra deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who has spent over two years in jail in connection with a money laundering case, was today granted bail by the Bombay High Court. Mr Bhujbal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in March 2016. One of the conditions the court imposed for bail is that Chhagan Bhujbal will have to appear before the Enforcement Directorate for questioning whenever he is summoned. The Enforcement Directorate alleges that the Bhujbals received kickbacks for awarding various government contracts, including the Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi, to the tune of Rs 870 crore. Part of this money, the ED claims, was parked abroad and also routed into India through various shell companies located across the country. During his time in prison, Chhagan Bhujbal has been admitted to hospital as well. In March this year, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had cautioned Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that his government would be held responsible if jailed party leader Chhagan Bhujbal suffered any "untoward fate in the days to come". In a letter written to Mr Fadnavis, Mr Pawar said that Chhagan Bhujbal was in jail since March 2016 and was in a fragile state of health. Nashik: Senior NCP leader and former district guardian minister Chhagan Bhujbal on Sunday lashed out at MNS chief Raj Thackeray, questioning the latter’s hesitance in lauding the contributions of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in public addresses. “While Sharad Pawar is vocal about these leaders, we wonder if Raj Thackeray would recognize the contributions of Shahu Maharaj, Phule and Ambedkar in the field of social development through his public addresses,” Bhujbal said. By Divyesh Singh: The Income Tax department has filed a prosecution complaint against Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal, his son Pankaj, nephew Sameer and their various companies over benami transactions worth Rs 100 crore. The IT officials found that Chhagan Bhujbal, with the help of his son Pankaj, nephew Sameer and other associates, had acquired benami properties by investing their money in a group of shell companies based in Kolkata, Mumbai and other places. The Kolkata-based firms were shell companies and did not operate from the given addresses. IT officials also found that business records had several discrepancies. The financial profiling of companies done by the IT department brought to light that the companies were not genuine in nature. The properties include a sugar mill (Girna Sugar Mill) located in Malegaon taluka of Nashik district worth Rs 17.82 crore and land parcels at Rohinjan village in Panvel, Andheri, Santacruz worth Rs 66.90 crore, Rs 17.24 crore and Rs 7.72 crore respectively. They were allegedly bought using investments made through benami companies by Bhujbal, his son Pankaj and nephew Sameer. The prosecution complaint has been filed under Section 26(3) of the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act (PBPT).
