A World Heritage Site, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is a prominent landmark in Mumbai. It was built in 1887 to commemorate the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria, and thus, was named as Victoria Terminus but in March 1996, the name of the terminus was changed to Chhatrapati Shivaji. However, the Government of Maharashtra later proposed addition of ‘Maharaj’ in the name, and in July 2017, the edifice was officially renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The architecture of this edifice is seen as one of the finest blends of Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival and Indian traditional style that was executed well by British architect F.W.Stevens. The station is believed to be a finest example of 19th century railway architectural marvels for its advance design. Currently, CSMT is amongst the busiest railway stations in India, from where more than 3 million rail commute everyday. The terminus facilitates 7 suburban and 11 separate out-station tracks.
