Justice UU Lalit appointed 49th Chief Justice of India

While Supreme Court judges retire on attaining the age of 65 years, judges of the 25 high courts retire at 62. Justice Lalit will be the second CJI who was directly elevated to the apex court bench from the Bar. Justice S M Sikri, who became the 13th CJI in January 1971, was the first lawyer to be elevated directly to the top court bench in March 1964. "In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 27 August 2022," a law ministry notification said. Justice Lalit has been part of several landmark judgements including the one which held the practice of divorce through instant triple talaq among Muslims illegal and unconstitutional. A renowned senior advocate, he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court on August 13, 2014. He shifted his practice to Delhi in January 1986, and in April 2004, he was designated as a senior advocate by the apex court. He was appointed a special public prosecutor for the CBI to conduct trial in the 2G spectrum allocation case. He has since been involved in the delivery of several landmark judgements of the apex court. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud Spotlights Citizens' "Very Vital" Role In Protection Of Rights

New Delhi: Courts are not the only recourse for protection of human rights and the citizenry has a very vital role to play in safeguarding them, Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud has said. Speaking at the University of Edinburgh's Law School on the topic "Global Change and the Legal Profession, Past and Future: Perspectives from India", Chief Justice Chandrachud said fora truly rights-alert or a rights-vibrant society, there has to be continuous engagement between the courts, citizens and civil society organisations. "Citizenry have a very vital role to play in the protection of rights. It would be overstating the point, in my mind I would postulate, to say that courts are the only source of recourse for protection of these rights," Chief Justice Chandrachud said.

CJI Ramana names Justice U.U. Lalit as successor

Chief Justice Ramana personally handed over a copy of his letter of recommendation dated August 3 to Justice Lalit when they met for tea in the Supreme Court in the morning before court. Chief Justice Ramana had at 9.30 p.m. Wednesday, August 3, 2022, r Sources said Chief Justice Ramana recommended Justice Lalit’s name in a matter of minutes after receiving Mr. Rijiju's letter. Chief Justice Ramana is retiring on August 26, 2022. The ‘Memorandum of Procedure of Appointment of Supreme Court Judges’ says “appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be of the senior most Judge of the Supreme Court considered fit to hold the office”. The process, according to the Memorandum, begins with the Union Law Minister seeking the recommendation of the outgoing CJI about the next appointment. Deciding cases not an easy task, says Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana The Minister has to seek the CJI’s recommendation “at the appropriate time”. The Memorandum does not elaborate or specify a timeline. The Memorandum says that “after receipt of the recommendation of the Chief Justice of India, the Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs will put up the recommendation to the Prime Minister who will advise the President in the matter of appointment”. This is expected to happen shortly. Justice Lalit, if appointed, would have a tenure of hardly three months. He retires on November 8, 2022.

New Delhi: Senior judges and lawyers at the Supreme Court were in for a surprise this morning as Chief Justice DY Chandrachud reached the court along with his two foster daughters and gave them a tour of the courtroom and his chamber. After reaching the court premises at 10 am, Justice Chandrachud entered the courtroom along with his daughters, who have disabilities, from the public gallery. He then took both of them to the CJI Court in Room No. 1 and showed them how the court functions. The Chief Justice showed his daughters - Mahi (16) and Priyanka (20) - where the judges sit and from where the lawyers argue.

Former CJI A.M Ahmadi passes away

Ahmadi was the chief justice from 1994 to 1997. He was the only Chief Justice of India who started at the very lowest rank to rise to the highest position of the Indian judiciary and became the third Muslim ever to serve as chief justice of India. He received the degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) from six of the most reputable Indian universities and also was one of the authors of numerous path-breaking judgements. During his time at the Supreme Court, Justice Ahmadi authored 232 judgments and was a part of 811 benches. His expertise ranged from constitutional law to human rights, freedom of speech, criminal, taxation, centre-state and interstate relations. He was also the Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. A man of principles, he did not shy away from controversial judgements. He dissented in the Judges' case, wrote a separate judgement in the Bommai's case, passed the midnight judgement against General Vaidya's assassins and formed a part of the minority in a judgement relating to Acquisition of Certain Area at Ayodhya Act to be unconstitutional.
