IPO subscription refers to the number of times a initial public offering (IPO) is subscribed to the total number of shares issued. For example, 10 times subscription for a particular IPO means that public offering is bidded 10 times more than the actual number of shares issued by the company. SEBI’s guidelines requires that all retail investors in an issue must receive an allotment of atleast one lot (one lot will be the number of shares calculated on the basis of the minimum application value of Rs. 10000 to Rs. 15000) in case of the issue is over-subscribed. The remaining available shares in the category will be allotted on proportionate basis. If the number of applications in retail category is more than the shares issued, lottery system is used to allocated the IPO.
