New Delhi: India on Tuesdayreported 13,405 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours,taking the virus tally to over 4.28 crore cases.According to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the number of active cases has fallen below two lakh after 49 days. The daily positivity rate was at 1.24per cent. India's Covid recovery tally increased to 4,21,58,510with 34,226recoveries in 24 hours. The death count climbed to 5,12,344 with 235 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 9am stated.The daily COVID-19 cases have remained below one lakh for 16 consecutive days. The active cases declined to 1,81,075, comprising 0.42 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has further improved to 98.38 per cent.. Covid Cases in Mumbai: Maharashtra, Mumbai see jump in daily Covid cases for second day in row

MUMBAI: For the second day in a row, Covid-19 cases in Mumbai and The daily Covid tally rose sharply in Mumbai, doubling from 195 cases 10 days back to 398 on Thursday. This is the highest tally since the first week of August when the daily count started dropping below 300 cases. Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported 5,108 new cases, up from the 4,145 cases on August 16. The daily test positivity rate in Mumbai also rose to 0.95% (41,628 tests as against 398 cases) after dropping to below 0.7% on some days. The state added 159 fatalities, while Mumbai added seven deaths. Maharashtra’s caseload rose to over 64.4 lakh, of which more than 7.4 lakh were in Mumbai and the total deaths climbed to nearly 1.4 lakh, of which 15,963 were in Mumbai. BMC officials, however, said there is no cause for concern. “The daily positivity rate is still below 1%. As we are testing more, more cases are detected,” said BMC additional commissioner Suresh Kakani. He had spoken to Kerala health officials who said that despite the rise in cases, less than 5% needed hospitalisation. “In Mumbai, we have a ready infrastructure in terms of beds, medicines and oxygen supply. Third wave could peak between January 6

Sandeep Juneja, senior professor, School of Technology and Computer Science, at the TIFR, said the peak fatalities could be in February, but it is expected to be around 30 to 50 per cent less than what was recorded during the deadly second wave between March to May last year. The city recorded 10,860 cases, the highest daily count since April 7, 2021, on Tuesday. "Cases in Mumbai could peak between January 6 to 13 and they are likely to come down to lower levels in around a month. The peak fatalities are expected to be around 30 to 50 per cent less than what was witnessed during the second (delta) wave," Juneja , who is involved in COVID-19 modelling for the city, said. He, however, did not comment on the number of cases that the city is expected to witness during the peak between January 6 to 13. Mumbai had recorded 11,206 coronavirus cases on April 4 last year. On May 1, the city recorded 90 deaths, the highest number of single-day fatalities, due to coronavirus so far. "The hospitalisation too is also expected to 50-70 per cent less than the second wave," he said. He said the data has been generated from the preliminary analysis from TIFR's Mumbai AB simulator and the assumptions are based on the South Africa, and United Kingdom data.
