K.K. Venugopal Will Be Attorney General For Another Year. Here's Why his Post is Significant

A terse notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice (UMLJ) on June 29 said, “The President is pleased to re-appoint Shri K.K.Venugopal, Senior Advocate as Attorney General for India for a period of one year w.e.f. 1 st July, 2020.” The emphasis is mine. When I read the phraseology of the notification, I was relieved. It correctly reproduces the one adopted in Article 76 of the Constitution: Attorney General for India. Despite the President’s correct and meticulous reference to the AG’s office, other authorities have not been so fastidious. The UMLJ itself in its latest Annual Report refers to his office as the Attorney General of India. The Ministry’s website too uses ‘of’ rather than ‘for’, while referring to the AGI’s office at several places. The Delhi high court’s division bench of two judges too in 2017 had referred to the office as the Attorney General of India while declaring that it is not a public authority for the purpose of Right to Information Act. The Delhi high court’s single judge, however , used the two expressions ‘for’ and ‘of’ interchangeably to describe the AGI’s office, although he was inclined to declare it as a public authority, and therefore, bound by the RTI Act. The Constituent Assembly Debates show that Members themselves used these words interchangeably to describe the AGI’s office, although the adopted provision clearly mentions ‘for’ rather than ‘of’. What difference does it make, whether one uses ‘for’ or ‘of’ to describe the AG’s...

Mukul Rohatgi is the newest name to be incorporated in the entourage of lawyers fighting for Aryan Khan’s bail. Mukul Rohatgi will be the lead counsel, alongside Satish Maneshinde and Amit Desai, present in the Bombay High Court to secure bail for the accused Aryan Khan. Who is Mukul Rohatgi? Mukul Rohatgi is the former Attorney General of India (AGI) , the highest law officer of the country. Mukul Rohatgi obtained his law degree from the prestigious Government Law College, Mumbai after which he started his practice in the Delhi High Court. Later he was appointed as the Additional Solicitor General for the Vajpayee Government in 1999. This appointment saw him shift his base to the Supreme Court more prominently. Mukul Rohatgi is also known for his friendship with the former Finance Minister of India Late Arun Jaitley. Rohatgi has fondly spoken of his friendship with Arun Jaitley and how they used to have chambers in Delhi High Court next to each other, we still have those chambers, says Mukul while paying tribute to Arun Jaitley in August 2019. Speak Up On AI, India

There is a scene in James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day where Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator turns to a crying John Connor and asks, “What’s wrong with your eyes?” If many eminent voices — from scientists to researchers to artificial intelligence (AI) pioneers to Tesla CEO Elon Musk — are to be believed, that is what the big AI debate distills down to. The ability to cry. To feel. To be human. To be alive even. Meanwhile, a statement on AI risk, signed by OpenAI CEO In all of this, India’s voice must be louder. One in every six humans is an Indian, and that alone should be reason enough for the country to influence the future of this technology that will change everything. The need for India to take a more proactive role is something that Altman agrees with. Speaking at The Economic Times Conversations on Wednesday in New Delhi, he suggested that India should use its presidency of G20 and the various consultations that are happening around it as a platform to call for greater international conversation on regulating AI. STEP INTO THE DEBATE Ask ordinary folks about AI and their reply would be influenced by the plots of science fiction movies. Immediate issues like the loss of jobs, inherent bias of underlying data and the use of AI to create misinformation have not really permeated popular consciousness. In this context, it is in India’s interest to step into the debate, take cognisance of the good, while creating safeguards for the not-so-good. Max Tegmark, pro...
