At CJI, Melanie provides support to the Justice Reinvestment Initiative, advancing policies that improve outcomes for impacted youth, adults, and communities. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a Master of Public Policy from the University of Michigan. Mackenzie Kushner joined CJI in March 2023 and works primarily on CJI’s Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI) projects to support the formation and implementation of evidence-based reforms. Formerly, Mackenzie worked as a research analyst in Consumer Insights for Universal Destinations & Experiences where she wrote surveys and conducted advanced statistical analyses to enhance data-driven decision making in the corporate sphere. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Justice Quarterly, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, and the American Journal of Criminal Justice. 2022, the year of change at the Supreme Court: Eight judges to retire, two new Chief Justices of India

The judges who are set to retire in the order of retirement date are: Justice R Subhash Reddy – January 4 Justice Vineet Saran – May 10 Justice L Nageswara Rao – June 7 Justice AM Khanwilkar – July 29 CJI NV Ramana - August 26 Justice Indira Banerjee - September 23 Justice Hemant Gupta – October 16 Justice UU Lalit - November 8 (will retire as CJI) Aside from current CJI NV Ramana, Justices UU Lalit and DY Chandrachud will helm the Court at different points of 2022. CJI Ramana will retire on August 26, following which Justice Lalit will take over as CJI, albeit for a short period. He will retire on November 8, after which the Justice Chandrachud will take over the top post. Justice Chandrachud will have one of the longest tenures of any CJI in the recent past and will hold the post till November 10, 2024, for a tenure that will last more than 2 years.
