India recorded 5% rise in cybercrimes in 2021: Govt data

New Delhi: India reported 52,974 cases of cybercrime in 2021, an increase of over 5 per cent from 2020 (50,035 cases) and over 15 per cent from 2019 (44,735 cases), according to the latest government data. Over 70 per cent of the cybercrime cases were reported from Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Assam, the National Crime Records Bureau's (NCRB) 'Crime In India 2021' report showed. The average rate of cybercrime incidents (per one lakh population) was recorded at 3.9 in the country in 2021, stated the NCRB, which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The charge-sheeting rate in cybercrime cases in 2021 was recorded at 33.8, the report showed, suggesting that the police probe was completed only in one-third of the cases registered across the country. Fraud, sexual exploitation, extortion most common motives Fraud was the motive in 60.8 per cent (32,230) of the cybercrime cases, followed by sexual exploitation in 8.6 per cent (4,555) cases and extortion in 5.4 per cent (2,883) cases, according to the report. Among states and union territories, the highest number of cybercrime cases was reported from Telangana (10,303), followed by Uttar Pradesh (8,829), Karnataka (8,136), Maharashtra (5,562) and Assam (4,846), while Delhi lodged 356 such offences. Govt Launches National Helpline to Report Cyber Fraud: Here's Everything You Need to Know

The Union Home Ministry has operationalised the national helpline 155260 and reporting platform for preventing financial loss due to cyber fraud. The national helpline and reporting platform provide a mechanism for persons cheated in cyber frauds to report such cases to prevent loss of their hard-earned money, a ministry statement said. Reinforcing the commitment of the Modi government to provide safe and secure digital payments eco-system, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah has operationalised the national helpline 155260 and reporting platform for preventing financial loss due to cyber fraud, the statement said. The helpline was soft launched on April 1, 2021. The helpline 155260 and its reporting platform has been made operational by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the home ministry, with active support and cooperation from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), all major banks, payment banks, wallets and online merchants. The Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System has been developed in-house by I4C to integrate law enforcement agencies and banks and financial intermediaries. It is currently being utilised along with 155260 by seven states and Union territories (Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh) covering more than 35 per cent of the country?s population. New Delhi: T he high-profile ransomware attack on Delhi’s All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) last month drew attention to holes in the country’s cybersecurity infrastructure, but it was hardly an isolated incident. Industry data shows that 2022 has been the worst year so far for India when it comes to cyberattacks — a problem that has only grown with increasing digitalisation. The question now is, what next? According to a “Ransomware attacks in India have increased significantly and one of the most distinguishing aspects in 2022 was the involvement of state actors,” Sameer Patil, senior fellow at Observer Research Foundation (ORF), a multi-disciplinary think-tank, told ThePrint. “So, it is not just profit motivation.
