One million people took shelter in 6,925 cyclone centres5. As of 25 October, 18 people died and around 10,000 houses were damaged. • Approximately 1.92 million people (1,120,386 host communities1 and 800,000 Rohingya refugees2) in Cox’s Bazar and 30,000 people including humanitarian workers in Bhasan Char were exposed to cyclone Sitrang. 1,049 households (4,945 people) affected, and 53 households (251 people) have been displaced. Reportedly, 1 person was injured, 1,010 shelters partially and 24 shelters fully damaged3. • UNICEF has six contingency partnerships with civil society organizations (CSOs), which are ready for activation in case of rapid response in cyclone affected areas. • UNICEF has mobilised US$ 1 million internal resources for immediate response to meet the priority needs of girls, women and people with disabilities. Bangladesh bracing for cyclone Sitrang tomorrow morning

Cyclone Sitrang is all set to intensify into a ‘severe’ category storm by Monday evening, according to weather bulletins. According to the Monday 8.30 am position of the cyclone, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Sitrang was located about 380 km south of West Bengal’s Sagar island and 520 km south-southwest of Barisal in Bangladesh. According to the latest forecast, Sitrang is expected to make landfall as a cyclone sometime during the morning hours of Tuesday, between Tinkona island and Sandwip near Barisal. A ‘yellow’ alert prevails for Baleshwar, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Bhadrak, Kendraparah and Jajpur districts of Odisha on Monday, warning of heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 105.4 mm in 24 hours). Coastal districts of West Bengal are bracing for heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 105.4 mm in 24 hours) on Tuesday. The IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert for 24 North and South Parganas, Nadia and West Medinipur districts.

Cyclone lashes Bangladesh, killing 15, causing power cuts

DHAKA, Oct 25 (Reuters) - A cyclone roared into the Bangladesh coast on Tuesday, killing at least 15 people, destroying houses, uprooting trees and disrupting road, power and communication links, officials said. Mass evacuations before Cyclone Sitrang made landfall on the west coast helped save lives, but the full extent of the casualties and damage would only be known after communications were fully restored, they said. "It was terrible. It looked like the sea was coming to grab us," Mizanur Rahman, a resident of Bhola district, told Reuters after communications were restored in his neighbourhood. "We spent a sleepless night, all we could do was pray." The cyclone barrelled in from the Bay of Bengal with winds gusting up to 88 kph (55 mph) and a storm surge of about 3 meters (10 feet) that flooded low-lying coastal areas. Power and telephone links have largely been cut and coastal areas plunged into darkness, officials said. Around 2,000 electric poles were damaged, leaving 8 million people without electricity, said Nasrul Hamid, junior minister for power, energy and mineral resources. "Efforts are underway to restore electricity as soon as possible," he told reporters. Most of the people killed were crushed by falling trees.
