Deaflympics: International Games for the Deaf

Unlike other games for athletes with disabilities, which are all directed by non-disabled officials, the Deaflympics are run by deaf people for deaf athletes. To qualify for the games, athletes must have a hearing loss of at least 55 decibels in their "better ear". Deaflympics 2021: India’s medal tally

Deaflympics 2021 was held at Festa da Uva Main Pavilion in the city of Caxias do Sul in southern Brazil. The quadrennial event began on May 1 and concluded on May 15 with around 2,100 athletes from 72 countries participating at the Games. India sent a contingent of 65 athletes to compete in 11 sports, making it the country’s largest-ever representation at Deaflympics since making its debut in 1965. The first edition of the Deaflympics, then known as the International Silent Games, were held in Paris in 1924. At the last edition in Turkey in 2017, the 46-member Indian contingent returned with five medals – a gold, a silver and three bronze. Wrestler Virender Singh defended his title in the 74kg freestyle event while Tokyo Olympian golfer Diksha Dagar claimed silver. Both athletes participated at the Deaflympics 2021, the 24th edition of the Games. In the 2021 edition, India recorded their best performance at the Deaflympics by winning 16 medals, including eight golds. India finished ninth in the Deaflympics 2021 medals tally. You’ve probably heard of the Paralympics, the international Olympic tournament for physically-impaired athletes. But did you know there is also an official Olympic tournament specifically for deaf athletes? It’s called the Deaflympics: The Beginning The Deaflympics were originally called the “International Games for the Deaf” and the first games were held in Paris in 1924. This was the first international sporting event held for athletes with a disability. The games were organized by deaf Frenchman Eugene Rubens-Alcais, who previously founded France’s sports federation for the deaf and mute. There were nine participating countries with 148 athletes who excelled in road cycling, diving, In 1996, the name changed to “World Games for the Deaf,” and then changed again in 2001 to “Deaflympics.” The games are held every two years and alternate Summer and Winter games. Deaflympics Now The most recent Deaflympics Games were held in July 2017 and hosted by Turkey. Over three thousand athletes from 97 countries participated in the games.
