Signs and Symptoms of Hypoxia

Hypoxia symptoms include changes in skin color, disorientation, confusion, dizziness, coughing and others. Hypoxia is low levels of oxygen in the body’s tissues. Hypoxemia is low levels of oxygen in the blood. While both hypoxia and hypoxemia can occur separately, they often occur together because if there is low blood oxygen, the blood does not deliver enough oxygen to the body’s tissues. The term hypoxia is often used to describe both low oxygen in the body’s tissues as well as low blood oxygen. What Are Symptoms of Hypoxia? Signs and symptoms of hypoxia include • Changes in skin color, ranging from blue to cherry red • Blue skin, lips, and fingernails • Confusion • Disorientation • • Fast heart rate • Rapid breathing • Shortness of breath • Slow heart rate • • Wheezing • Hypoxia is a medical emergency. If you are experiencing symptoms of hypoxia, call 911 and get to a hospital’s emergency department. How Is Hypoxia Diagnosed? Hypoxemia is diagnosed with a physical examination, where a doctor will listen to the heart and lungs, and also check to see if the skin, lips, or fingernails have a bluish color. Tests used to check oxygen levels include: • Pulse oximetry • A small device with a sensor that clips to the finger and measures the amount of oxygen in the blood • Normal readings are about 94% to 99% oxygen saturation levels • Arterial blood • A blood sample is taken from an artery to measure levels of oxygen in the blood • Pulmonary function tests What Is the Treatment...

Hypoxia • Care notes • • • • • • • What is hypoxia? Hypoxia is a decreased level of oxygen in all or part of your body, such as your brain. What causes hypoxia? Some conditions can cause hypoxia to occur suddenly. Other conditions may cause hypoxia to occur over time. Hypoxia may be caused by any of the following: • Travel to a high altitude • Near drowning or choking • Carbon monoxide poisoning • Exposure to cold for a long period of time • Severe anemia • Chronic lung disease, such as emphysema • Congestive heart failure What are the signs and symptoms of hypoxia? • Confusion or memory loss • Clumsiness • Drowsiness • Changes in behavior • Vision changes • Bluish-gray lips or nails • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting How is hypoxia diagnosed? • A pulse oximeter is a device that measures the amount of oxygen in your blood. • Blood tests may be done to measure blood gases, such as oxygen, acids, and carbon dioxide. Blood tests may also be used to find the cause of your hypoxia. How is hypoxia treated? Treatment depends on the cause of your hypoxia. Oxygen therapy will be used to help you breathe easier. You may also need medicines to treat the cause of your hypoxia. Mechanical ventilation and IV fluids may be used for more severe forms of hypoxia. A ventilator is a machine that gives you oxygen The ventilator breathes for you when you cannot breathe well on your own. Just the FAQs, USA TODAY Editor's note: The first sentence of this story has been updated to attribute information to an attorney representing the commissioner of the Alabama Department of Corrections. An attorney representing the commissioner of the Alabama Department of Corrections indicated this week that there’s a “very good chance” Alabama could carry out an execution by an untried method as early next week. When Alabama and two other states authorized nitrogen hypoxia, supporters said it was a more humane method of execution. Others, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have said there isn’t yet sufficient evidence to back up that claim. Because no person has ever been executed by inhaling pure nitrogen — there is seemingly no way to humanely test its use — exactly how the state will carry out a nitrogen hypoxia execution is unclear. A deputy state attorney general said the state has developed a protocol for it, but added that it has not been finalized. The state also has not released details of that protocol to the public or even, as of Tuesday, the man who could be executed with it in just days. Previously: From 2021: Here’s what we do know Nitrogen hypoxia — elsewhere referred to as nitrogen suffocation or nitrogen asphyxiation — is the term the state uses for the proposed execution method that would cause a person’s death by forcing him or her to inhale pure nitrogen, or nitrogen in much higher concentrations than are present in the atmosphere. diminished availability of oxygen to the body tissues; its causes are many and varied and includes a deficiency of oxygen in the atmosphere, as in adj hypox´ic. Signs and symptoms vary according to the cause. Generally they include dyspnea, rapid pulse, syncope, and mental disturbances such as delirium or euphoria.
