Delhi: Car Hits Bike Carrying Family of 4 in Dwarka; Two Dead, Two Injured

A case under sections 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 304A (Causing death by negligence), and 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Dwarka North police station.

Congress leader Rajesh Lilothia's wife died in an early morning accident after her car was allegedly hit by a speeding four-wheeler in north Delhi's Kashmere Gate area, police said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said a PCR call was received at the Kashmere Gate police station regarding an accident. On reaching the spot, the police team found a Baleno car in accidental condition and that the victim was already rushed to Trauma Centre by CAT Ambulance. They said Madhu Rajesh Lilothia (55), a resident of Anand Parvat, was declared brought dead at the hospital at 6.03 am, he said. The accused driver of the offending vehicle was traced with the help of CCTV footages and subsequently arrested, Kalsi said. He said during the course of investigation, it was learnt that the deceased is the wife of a former Congress MLA, Rajesh Lilothia. A case under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at Kashmere Gate police station and the investigation taken up, he said. "It was a blind accident case as there was no clue about the offending vehicle. A team was formed and each and every member of team was tasked accordingly. In order to ascertain any clue, local sources were also deployed and main focus was given on CCTV cameras to get clue from Anand Parvat to Shahadra flyover and this helped the team the offending vehicle which was a Maruti Bareza," he added. The first girl sustained minor injuries and allegedly fled from the spot out of fear while the other girl fell in front of the car after the collision and was run over, said an official. The student, identified as Ashraf Nawaz Khan (30) lost his life in the accident. He was pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy in Composite materials for 5 years. Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Manoj C said the accident took place near Gate number 1, outside the IIT campus in Hauz Khas area of southwest Delhi.“We have apprehended driver Avihant Sherawat, resident of Mahipalpur, and further interrogation is on,” he said. “Two students, Ashraf Nawaz Khan and Ankur Shukla (29) went to a restaurant in SDA market opposite IIT Delhi and were crossing the road. A car which was coming from Nehru Place side hit both of them,” the DCP said. The police received information through a PCR call after which they rushed to the spot and found broken parts of a car, a pair of blue sports shoes, and one brown coloured shoe lying strewn on the road.They also found a damaged vehicle i.e. a white Hyundai Verna car, on the pavement nearly 400 meters away from the site.
