By India Today Web Desk: Delhi recorded its lowest temperature this season with the mercury dropping to 1.4°C during the wee hours of Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in Delhi for the next six days starting today, Monday, owing to the upcoming severe coldwave in the national capital region. While the first three days will set the winter chills again with the temperature dropping to 2-3 degrees Celsius, Delhi people will witness dense fog conditions for the next three days. A severe cold wave is likely to grip parts of northern India, including the Delhi & National Capital Region, till Wednesday, said the IMD on Sunday, January 15. According to the IMD, the temperature in Delhi-NCR may plummet to 2 degrees Celsius on Monday and Tuesday. The Met Office further added that the temperature would likely be 4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, resulting in coldwave conditions after a brief respite for citizens of Delhi-NCR. The IMD has also predicted heavy fog and low visibility over Delhi-NCR for the next five days. Amid all this, rehearsal for the Republic Day parade on January 26 was underway at Delhi's Karthavya Path. The relative humidity oscillated between 39 per cent and 53 per cent, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Strong surface winds also prevailed in parts of the city. Earlier, the weather department had predicted that ALSO READ | According to the seven-day forecast by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Delhi is likely to witness a partly cloudy sky with strong surface winds during the day on Wednesday. In the next few days, the maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 38 and 28 degrees Celsius respectively. LIGHT RAIN LIKELY Amid the scorching heatwave, Delhiites can expect some respite as the weather department, in its latest bulletin, predicted very light rain and thundershowers at one or two places during the night on Thursday and Friday. The said weather conditions are likely due to the influence of Cyclone Biparjoy, which is gaining steam in the Arabian Sea.

New Delhi: Delhi today recorded a minimum temperature of 2.2 degrees Celsius, five degrees below the average and the season's lowest so far, according to the India Meteorological Department. Very dense fog reduced visibility at Palam to around 50 metres, affecting road and rail traffic. The visibility at the Palam observatory near the Indira Gandhi International Airport was 25 metres at 5:30 am. A Railways spokesperson said 36 trains were delayed by one to seven hours due to the foggy weather. According to the weather office, 'very dense' fog is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, 51 and 200 metres is 'dense', 201 and 500 metres 'moderate', and 501 and 1,000 metres 'shallow'. The Safdarjung observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, logged a minimum temperature of 2.2 degrees Celsius. The weather department has predicted mainly clear skies, moderate to dense fog and cold day conditions during the day. The maximum temperature is likely to settle around 16 degrees Celsius.
