Maharashtra Twists: Eknath Shinde is CM, Fadnavis Now Ready to be Part of New Govt After BJP Appeal

In a shocking twist to the week-long Maharashtra political tussle, Shiv Sena strongman Eknath Shinde was announced as the new chief minister by Devendra Fadnavis, who was earlier speculated to occupy the top post. Fadnavis, who was Uddhav’s predecessor, was believed to be the new Maharashtra chief minister with Shinde as his deputy. But in a shocker, the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra assembly announced that he won’t be a part of the government, but would extend his full support. “I will stay out of power,” Fadnavis said. But in another turn of events, BJP national president JP Nadda said Fadnavis has been directed by the BJP leadership to be the deputy CM. “BJP central leadership has decided that Devendra ji should be part of the government and we have requested him personally also and has been directed to be deputy CM," Nadda said. In a tweet, Nadda then confirmed that Fadnavis has agreed to be a part of the new Maharashtra government. भाजपा ने महाराष्ट्र की जनता की भलाई के लिए बड़े मन का परिचय देते हुए एकनाथ शिंदे जी का समर्थन करने का निर्णय किया। श्री देवेन्द्र फडणवीस जी ने भी बड़े मन दिखाते हुए मंत्रिमंडल में शामिल होने का निर्णय किया है, जो महाराष्ट्र की जनता के प्रति उनके लगाव को दर्शाता है।— Jagat Prakash Nadda (@JPNadda) Earlier today, addressing the media, Fadnavis said, “Eknath Shinde will be the CM, BJP will support. We will expand soon. Today at 7.30 pm, Eknath Shinde will take oath as CM of Maharashtra.” Sena (rebels), as well as BJP MLAs and some in...

'Minor fight': Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis debunks ‘lathicharge on pilgrims’ report

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis denied reports about the alleged lathicharge on ‘warkari’ pilgrims by the police in Pune’s Alandi town. Warkaris are devotees of Lord Vitthal, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Fadnavis said a minor fight broke out between the devotees and the police.  He was quoted as saying by PTI: “There was no lathicharge on the warkari community”. The incident occurred when devotees were trying to enter the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Samadhi Mandir in Alandi town. "We learned from last year's stampede-like situation at the same place (Alandi) and tried giving a few number of the entry pass to various groups. It was decided to issue 75 passes to each group that participates in the pilgrimage," said Fadnavis. The Maharashtra deputy CM added some 400-500 youths insisted to participate in the pilgrimage and did not follow the rules about restricted allotment of passes. He added they broke barricades and some police personnel got injured while trying to stop these youths.  Meanwhile, Pimpri Chinchwad police commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey stated some local youth tried to enter the procession forcefully, leading to an altercation with the police. He added the police did not do lathi charge or use any force against them. Choubey added police made elaborate arrangements and also held meetings with temple trustees to prevent untoward incidents.  Some local youths tried to forcibly enter the Palkhi procession, leading to an altercat...

Day after ad row, Shinde Sena tries to control damage with CM

By Ritvick Arun Bhalekar: A day after an advertisement in Maharashtra newspapers by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena sparked a row over the comparison between the popularity of the CM over his deputy Devendra Fadnavis, the state government released another advertisement featuring both the leaders as the face of development and growth in Maharashtra. The earlier ad reported "PM Modi for India, Eknath Shinde for Maharashtra", quoting a survey where Shinde is shown as more preferred for the CM post than BJP's Devendra Fadnavis. ALSO READ | The advertisement issued on Wednesday focuses on the BJP-Sena alliance in Maharashtra and attempts to highlight how it has the "support of the majority of the people in Maharashtra". "The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance is at the heart of the wishes of the public," the advertisement reads. Likewise, photos of late Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray and senior leader Anand Dighe were also there in the ad along with PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The previous advertisement missed Thackeray’s photo, which drew ire from Uddhav's camp. The advertisement published on Tuesday had reportedly upset BJP’s leadership and cadre. While the tagline of advertisement put out on Tuesday was "Modi for India, Shinde for Maharashtra", the chief minister sought to downplay it, saying both he and BJP leader Fadnavis were "in people's minds" and working together. Shiv Sena minister Shambhuraj Desai said, "Our party has nothing to do with the adver...

Shinde new Maharashtra CM, Fadnavis deputy in last

In a surprise turn of events Thursday, Shiv Sena rebel leader Eknath Shinde was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra and BJP leader and former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as the Deputy Chief Minister. Shinde became the 20th Chief Minister of the state a day after Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray resigned as CM ahead of a floor test, bringing to an end the 31-month rule of his Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition. What came as a surprise was the about-turn by Fadnavis. Shortly after he told a press conference that he would not be a part of the government, the central leadership of the party said Fadnavis would be joining the government. Read | It is learnt that even the Prime Minister spoke to Fadnavis, asking him to join the government. The announcement of Shinde’s appointment as Chief Minister, made by Fadnavis, came as a surprise because the BJP with 106 MLAs is the single largest party in the existing House of 287 – the total strength is 288 but a Sena MLA passed away last month – and the natural claimant to the post of the Chief Minister. Fadnavis next to him, Shinde thanked the BJP leadership. “I express my deep gratitude to Prime Minister He said Fadnavis has shown a large heart. “No one does this after having 120 MLAs. If they wish, they could have kept the CM post, but they showed generosity to give the CM post to Balasaheb’s Shiv Sainik,” Shinde said. Fadnavis said, “We are not after power. This is a fight for ideology and Hindutva and for that reason the...
