“Designed by Apple in California” chronicles 20 years of Apple design

“The idea of genuinely trying to make something great for humanity was Steve’s motivation from the beginning, and it remains both our ideal and our goal as Apple looks to the future,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer. “This archive is intended to be a gentle gathering of many of the products the team has designed over the years. We hope it brings some understanding to how and why they exist, while serving as a resource for students of all design disciplines.” While this is a design book, it is not about the design team, the creative process or product development. It is an objective representation of our work that, ironically, describes who we are. It describes how we work, our values, our preoccupations and our goals. We have always hoped to be defined by what we do rather than by what we say. “ Starts at $199 (US) in small (10.20” x 12.75”) Available beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, November 16, exclusively from 1 Available at the following US retail locations: Apple SoHo, Apple Fifth Avenue, Apple Upper East Side, Apple Williamsburg and Apple World Trade Center in New York; Apple The Grove in Los Angeles and Apple Third Street in Santa Monica; Apple North Michigan Avenue in Chicago; Apple Lincoln Road in Miami; Apple Northpark in Dallas; Apple Union Square in San Francisco; Apple Palo Alto and Apple Infinite Loop in Cupertino. I'm not buying the Apple Vision Pro for $3,500, but here's why I want to rent one

Call them ski goggles if you want, but I'll admit I find the Apple Vision Pro look pretty cool. Not as much sold on the projection of your eyes that others will see on the glass, but that's something I can look past right now. The bigger issue, though, is that Apple's big new headset arrives with a huge price and a very small use case — at least for me. And that one use case is why I'm hoping Apple will rent this thing out. (Image credit: Apple) As comfortingly familiar that above home screen of the Apple Vision Pro is, this is possibly where Apple lost me. This is a first generation product not due til next year, I know, but the fact that this thing is being sold to let you project apps you already use into your field of vision, is boring. Heck, Apple's own iPadOS 17 presentation talked about the health problems that occur when you hold screens too close to your eyes. Yes, even someone deeply ensconced in the Apple ecosystem can look at this and go "okay." I love my 14-inch MacBook Pro, I'm excited to upgrade to the Heck, Apple's own The Apple Vision Pro offers immersion at high prices (Image credit: Apple) And if you say "oh, but this is better, because it's immersive," I'll ask what about wearing a headset with short battery life will have you feeling truly immersed? Yes, there are other use cases that leverage the way the Vision Pro takes over your eyes. My colleague Mark Spoonauer got to And even if the price comes down to a point where these headsets are as affordabl...

Ryan Ross, USA TODAY No doubt you’ve heard Apple officially took the wraps off Apple Vision Pro, its first “spatial computing” device which debuted at this week’s Not only is this ski goggle-shaped mixed-reality headset Apple’s biggest product since Apple Watch debuted in 2015, but it’s easily the most ambitious. Even if you could afford it, is it any good? I had a chance to wear and use Vision Pro for about 30 minutes and run through several applications that fused augmented reality (where you can see digital information overlaid on top of the real world around you) with virtual reality (realistic imagery that fully envelopes your field of vision, and is tied to head-tracking too).
