Artist known for ‘Hipster Mickey’ line will sign at Disneyland Pride events – Orange County Register

This year, Disney celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Walt Disney Company, marking the beginning of an iconic animation studio started by brothers Roy and Walt Disney. Since 1923, art has been an integral part of Disney’s core. The idea branches out into its resorts where galleries are scattered throughout the parks. Disneyana at Disneyland opened in 1976. Off the Page at Disney California Adventure welcomed guests in 2001 and later WonderGround Gallery opened at Downtown Disney District. “There’s a core group of us that are still around from that opening day in 2012,” says artist Jerrod Maruyama, 51. Sign up for our His “Hipster Mickey” collection featured the Disney mascot wearing dark rimmed glasses and a beanie cap. Mickey holds a takeaway beverage in one hand and a cell phone in the other. Maruyama’s Hipster Mickey made the mouse look cool but still cute. It became synonymous with WonderGround Gallery and the next wave of Disney-themed art. As the first freelance artist to have his own signature line, Maruyama’s work is found on merchandise throughout the parks. “I was the first one, luckily, to have a signature line,” says Maruyama. “Mine was kind of a test to see if this would work. If this is something that people would be interested in.” of Expand The success led him to launch three more lines. Other artists, including a collection by Joey Chou, followed. Maruyama will be signing his work at Disneyland’s first Pride Nite events, Tuesday, June 13 and Thursday, ...

Disneyland Announces 2023 Oogie Boogie Bash Dates, Return of Halloween Time, Plaza de la Familia on Sept. 1

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year at Disneyland Resort. The leaves change color, the Halloween spirit creeps in and beloved seasonal celebrations make their return! Beginning Sept. 1, 2023, you’ll discover family-friendly fall fun and fare across the Happiest Place on Earth. During our Today, I’ll be treating you to even more sweet details for this year’s fall festivities for all ages, including limited-time offerings, beautiful décor all around the resort and dates for Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party. Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort Spirited seasonal décor and characters dressed in Halloween looks will appear in both theme parks, presenting countless photo opportunities – including the Main Street Pumpkin Festival at Disneyland park and the transformation of Cars Land at Disney California Adventure park into Radiator Screams, where the local residents and establishments are decked out in their Haul-O-Ween best. At Disneyland park, Jack Skellington and his friends from “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” will once again wreck the halls of Haunted Mansion Holiday. Another deliciously diabolical gingerbread house, created by the Disneyland Resort culinary team, will be displayed in the transformed attraction’s ballroom. Sandy Claws has kept this year’s design under wraps, but I promise I won’t tell if you take a little peek. Each night through Oct. 31, the “Halloween Screams” nighttime spectacular will summon supernatural projections...

Looking Back at Disneyland's Opening Day, 65 Years Later

Children running through gate of Sleeping Beauty's Castle at Walt Disney's theme park, Disneyland. Allan Grant/The LIFE Picture Collection via Getty Images Disneyland's opening day was "disastrous" by many accounts — the park wasn't quite ready for visitors, it ran out of food and drinks, counterfeit tickets led to unexpectedly large crowds, and shoes even got stuck in freshly laid asphalt in 100-degree California heat. Despite all these issues, Disneyland's opening day will be forever remembered as a turning point in the amusement park industry's history, kicking off the wildly successful Disney Parks empire that has since evolved into a cultural phenomenon. The 65th anniversary for "The Happiest Place on Earth" wound up being historically significant for another, more sobering reason. In 2020, a year that was meant to be joyous and celebratory for the park, the coronavirus pandemic shuttered all six theme park resorts around the world for the first time in their history. Disneyland remained closed through its anniversary, July 17, and didn't open until the following April. Disneyland opening in Anaheim, California on July 17, 1955. USC Libraries/Corbis via Getty Images A Look Back at Disneyland's History Disneyland was the only park completely overseen by Walt Disney — the five remaining theme park resorts opened around the globe in the U.S., Europe, and Asia after his 1966 death — but his legacy lives on in the Disney theme parks today. Walt Disney didn't invent the the...

One of the biggest choices you have to make once you decide to go to the Happiest Place on Earth (aka If you're struggling to figure out where to stay near Disneyland, know that you’re not alone. Along with park tickets, lodging is one of the most significant costs of any Disney vacation, so it's important to find the right balance between price, perks and location. Should you want to use your hotel or credit card points to defray part of the cost of a Disneyland trip, you'll also need to consider the value of your stay when narrowing down your options. When visiting Disneyland, does it make the most sense to stay at an on-property hotel owned by Disney? Or, should you stay at an off-property hotel, whether it's independently owned or tied to a particular brand? I would like to subscribe to The Points Guy newsletters and special email promotions. The Points Guy will not share or sell your email. See Why? To start, Disneyland’s footprint is substantially smaller, meaning many of the off-property hotels are just as close to the parks as the on-property ones. There are literally dozens of hotels within walking distance of the Disneyland gates, so you don’t have to sacrifice location or sign yourself up for extra transit when staying in a non-Disney-operated hotel.
