History The first Doctors' Day was celebrated on March 30, 1933, to commemorate Dr Crawford W. Long's first use of ether anaesthesia. Delivering greeting cards to physicians, both alive and dead, is one of the most common ways to commemorate Doctors' Day. Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a Georgia doctor, began this practise. She believed her husband and other doctors deserved greater credit for their efforts and decided to make this notion a reality. Almond sent greeting cards to all local doctors and their wives, and even placed flowers on the graves of deceased doctors, including Dr Long. The flowers were red carnations, which would subsequently become the holiday's official flower. The red carnation is still used to express thanks. US President George H.W. Bush declared National Doctors Day on Febru...

National Doctors' Day takes on much greater meaning this year

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold and upend American life, physicians, nurses and the health care workforce leading this remarkable response effort are putting their health and safety on the line every day. We’ve seen many cases in the U.S and around the globe in which physicians have fallen seriously ill or died after treating patients for COVID-19. The physical toll alone is daunting—extremely long and taxing hours in the hospital—but the emotional toll is just as significant, and enough to overwhelm even the most seasoned and experienced doctor. No one can say for sure how long the health threat will last or how much more our nation’s physicians will be asked to give. Their courage in this crisis is magnified by woefully inadequate supplies of even the most basic equipment and protective gear. Physicians in some of the states and urban centers that have been hit hardest by the pandemic are pleading for tens of thousands of additional masks, gowns and gloves to care for the surging patient population. We’re hearing from physicians and hospital administrators that existing supplies are so depleted that they may only last a matter of days or weeks in many care facilities. Physicians are reusing masks, sewing masks at home, and being told to use bandanas. With the health and safety of physicians and patients on the line, an inadequate supply of protective equipment is completely unacceptable. Happy Doctor’s Day!

National Doctors’ Day falls on March 30 annually to recognize the contributions of physicians to individual lives and communities. Last year alone, our doctors made over 500,000 inpatient and outpatient encounters all while managing the stress and upheaval of a second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. They took on more shifts, more patients, more leadership roles, and inspired us with their outstanding patient care and zest along the way. There are no words or gifts that could begin to express our gratitude for the mountains they have moved. Thank you for caring for our patients, our department and each other. Doctors' Day 2022: Mahatma Gandhi’s physician and India’s first medical consultant, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy was one of the most prominent Indian leaders of the 20th century. The former Chief Minister of West Bengal not only established many medical institutions in the nation but was also a true statesman. He was born on July 1, 1882, and died on July 1, 1962. For his further studies in medicine, Bidhan went to Britain in 1909 to enrol in St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London. However, his application was rejected by the dean who did not want to admit an Asian student, albeit with excellent academic performance and records. However, a perseverant Bidhan went on to apply 30 times! His application was finally accepted in the 30th attempt, and in May 1911, he qualified to become a member of the Royal College of Physicians and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, simultaneously. He returned home later that year. On Mahatma Gandhi’s advice, Roy served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal for 14 years — from 23 January 1948 until his death, which happened to be his 80th birthday — July 1, 1962. When he took charge as the CM of West Bengal, it was torn by communal violence, shortage of food, unemployment and a massive influx of refugees after the When Gandhi was undertaking a fast in Parnakutivin, Poona in 1933, Dr Roy attended to him. Gandhi refused to take medicine on the grounds it was not made in India, and asked Dr Roy, "Why should I take your treatment? Do you treat four h...
