Marvel Studios Updates MCU Timeline to Fit in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and It Might Surprise You

(Photo: Disney+) The MCU timeline has become an increasingly complicated thing in Phase 4, but the timeline does match up with the release order of the films – presuming No Way Home also took place after Eternals. However, the real complications continue to be the natural questions and inconsistencies that tend to arise. Why Doctor Strange never intervened in Scarlet Witch's life during or immediately after WandaVision was one big issue fans got stuck on; how Doctor Strange and the Masters of the Mystic Arts never seemed to register the near-birth of a Celestial and Eternals battling Deviants across the world would be another fair question... Of course, in this make-believe universe of stories about superpowered and mystical people, we should probably suspend just a little bit of logical analysis and accept that there will some rough edges and inconsistencies in this epic saga. "In the same way that Sam Raimi's Spider-Man helped cement what a modern superhero blockbuster could be, it feels like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is one of the first postmodern superhero blockbusters. The film is tasked with being both a worthy follow-up to the complicated, decade-long storylines of two of Marvel's most mystical characters, as well as the gonzo foray into what are sure to be many, many more multiversal stories within the MCU. By and large, the film succeeds on both fronts, and its few stumbles are still vastly more entertaining than they could be in the hands of a l...

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness review: Messy magic

By May 6, 2022 Share After 27 films and a long list of box-office records, the If there’s one thing the over-packed but visually stunning Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness makes clear, it’s that even one of the MCU’s clunkiest films so far can provide an entertaining experience. Directed by Sam Raimi ( Spider-Man, The Evil Dead) from a script by Emmy-winning Loki and Heels writer Michael Waldron, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness brings Benedict Cumberbatch back as Marvel’s titular sorcerer for an adventure through a multitude of parallel universes. The film finds Stephen Strange (Cumberbatch) attempting to protect a teenage girl with the ability to open portals between universes from a powerful — but familiar — enemy hoping to steal her powers. Along with Cumberbatch, the film brings back a host of MCU veterans, including Elizabeth Olsen ( The Baby-Sitters Club) as the young, universe-hopping America Chavez. Much was made of Multiverse of Madness reported to be the franchise’s first, full-on horror — a genre in which the Evil Dead and Drag Me to Hell filmmaker has had plenty of success. At points, Raimi’s genre aesthetic does manage to bleed through Marvel’s polish, with the story giving him the opportunity to dabble in all sorts of gruesome moments filled with zombies, gory deaths, and dark magics. Those moments are few and far between, though, and they rarely feel sufficiently blended into the film around them. Several scenes in Multiverse of Madness...

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’: The Cost of Dreamwalking and Incursions

In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Stephen Strange, along with fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, learned about two magical tomes — the Darkhold, the Book of the Damned, which corrupts its reader, and the Book of Vishanti, the Darkhold’s antithesis, which allows any good and pure magic wielder with enough magic defenses to defeat evil. After Doctor Strange and Sorcerer Supreme Wong save a teenaged America Chavez from Gargantos, they learn that dreams are windows into the lives of their Multiversal selves. Whenever they dreamt, they were getting a glimpse of an alternate universe where their alternate selves existed. Dreams don’t allow you to impact your alternate self in any way. However, within the pages of the Darkhold is a powerful spell — Dreamwalking — which does violate your alternate self’s will. Marvel.com spoke to the creative team behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to learn more about the evilest spell within the pages of the Book of the Damned. WHAT IS DREAMWALKING? Film co-producer Richie Palmer told Marvel.com that dreamwalking is “basically possessing the body of an alternate version of yourself out in the Multiverse.” In the film, Mordo of Earth-838 explains to Strange and America that dreamwalking is the ultimate offense a person can do. “It’s an evil, disgusting act,” emphasized Palmer. “It’s taking over the body of someone else. You can’t go and possess another person’s body, even if it’s another version of...
