How the renaming of an Andhra district after B.R. Ambedkar exposed caste divides

The Andhra Pradesh government’s decision to rename the newly created Konaseema district after Dalit icon B.R. Ambedkar has flared up the caste divide in the region that manifested itself in the form of arson at the Amalapuram district headquarters. On May 24, hundreds of people representing organisations dominated by both OBCs (Other Backward Classes) and forward castes had taken to the streets, ostensibly to oppose the government’s notification about renaming the district as Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema. Hurling stones and petrol bombs, the protesters set afire the homes of state transport minister Pinipe Viswarup, who is a Dalit, and Mummidivaram MLA P.V. Satish Kumar, apart from torching state-run buses and other government properties. The police were caught unprepared. About 20 police personnel, including district superintendent of police K.S.S.V. Subba Reddy, were injured in the targeted violence. The ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) government had renamed Konaseema keeping in mind the large Dalit population in the district. Dalits constitute a major vote bank of the party. In 2019, MLA Satish Kumar, who belongs to the YSRCP, had proposed that the Amalapuram revenue division be made a separate district and named after Ambedkar. Konaseema was born out of the reorganisation of Andhra’s districts in April this year, from the existing 13 to 26. The state government, during the process, had also renamed some districts, such as one after freedom fighter Al...

How the Decision to Name a District After Ambedkar Led to Violent Protests in Coastal Andhra

Hyderabad: The On May 24, those opposed to the change in the name took to the streets, in violation of prohibitory orders, demanding that Ambedkar’s name be dropped. Protestors vandalised public and private property, pelted stones injuring several policemen and commoners, and torched several vehicles. They set the houses of a minister and a ruling YSR Congress legislator on fire. Also read: Internet, which was suspended for about a fortnight, was restored in a phased manner across the district only on Tuesday, June 7. Section 144 (prohibits gathering of four or more people in the concerned area) of the Code Of Criminal Procedure and Section 30 (regulation of public assemblies and processions and licensing of the same) of the Police Act still continue to be enforced in some parts of the district. At last count, about 111 were arrested in connection with the violence after seven first information reports (FIRs) were registered. An eerie calm now envelopes Amalapuram town and the Konaseema district. What may seem to be a spontaneous outburst of opposition to the change of name actually points to a deep-seated casteism that pervades this coastal Andhra district, which is best known as the granary of Andhra Pradesh. Behind the lush green fields and coconut canopies, which dot this fertile and prosperous district, is a population vertically divided along the caste lines. Lush green fields in coastal Andhra.
