By Express News Service HYDERABAD: The 125-foot tall statue of Dr BR Ambedkar will be ready by the end of next year as civil works related to the construction resumed after a delay of four years. One of the tallest statues of the Father of Indian Constitution in the country is being constructed near NTR Gardens and the premises occupies an area of 10 acres. The State government has taken up this construction at a cost of Rs 146 crore. According to officials at Roads and Buildings Department, the premises will have a museum, a photo gallery, an exhibition library and other artefacts to showcase the life and works of Dr Ambedkar. All the amenities like toilets, canteen, ample parking space will be made available here, officials said. The stainless steel statue will have a width of 45 feet and a bronze coating. Last year, the Telangana government had unveiled an artist’s impression of the 125-foot statue of Dr BR Ambedkar that the government plans to construct. It was in 2016 that the State government had laid the foundation stone for the statue. However, it got delayed due to the delay in studying about large statues, technical specifications and roping in experts for the finalisation of design for the statue. Hyderabad, April 14: A 125-feet statue of Dr B. R. Ambedkar was unveiled on the banks of Hussain Sagar lake in the heart of Hyderabad on Friday coinciding with his birth anniversary. Amid chanting of religious hymns by Buddhist monks, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao unveiled the bronze statue in the presence of Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar, state ministers and top officials. Floral petals were showered on the statue from a special helicopter at the event attended by about 40,000 people who converged from various parts of the state. KCR and Prakash Ambedkar went around the museum and gallery highlighting the life of the late leader. A special audio-visual on construction of the giant statue was also screened on the occasion. Said to be the world’s tallest statue of Ambedkar, it has come up adjacent to the newly built Telangana Secretariat, which has also been named after the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. A total 360 tonnes of stainless steel has been used in the armature structure of the statue. The developers have used 114 tonnes of bronze in casting of the statue. (HTfile) The iconic structure of Ambedkar, which will set another landmark for the state, is claimed to be the tallest statue in the country ever built for the ‘architect of Indian Constitution’ – with an overall height of 175-ft, including a 50-ft-high circular base resembling the edifice of Parliament of India. An official from the chief minister’s office said the statue weighs 474 tonnes, while 360 tonnes of stainless steel was used for building the armature structure of the statue, 114 tonnes of bronze was used for casting of the statue. Interestingly, the statue was designed by renowned sculptors, Ram Vanji Sutar (98) and his son Anil Ram Sutar (65) of Ram Sutar Art Creations in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, who also designed several monumental sculptures, including the world’s tallest statue — the Statue of Unity (597 feet) of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat. “The overall cost of the project was estimated at ₹146.50 crore and the construction was taken up by KPC Projects Limited as per the agreement concluded on June 3, 2021. “The pedestal on which the statue is installed has three floors with a total built-up area of 26,258 sq ft. During the inauguration in Hyderabad, flowers will be showered on Ambedkar's statue from a helicopter. Ambedkar's grandson Prakash Ambedkar will be invited as the chief guest during the programme. BR Ambedkar's statue has been installed on 11 acres of land. Renowned sculptor and architect Padma awardee Ram V Sutar and his son Anil Sutar have designed his statue. The project, launched in 2016, is expected to cost around Rs 146 crore. The stone used for the statue was sourced from Agra, Noida and Jaipur. About 155 steel and 110 tonnes of bronze have been used to make the statue. Along with the Buddha statue at Telangana Martyrs' Memorial and Hussain Sagar, now Ambedkar's statue will also be a center of attraction for tourists.

Chief Minister of Telangana K Chandra Shekhar Rao announced on April 14, 2016, that the state government’s plan to install a 125-feet-tall statue of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar at the NTR Gardens located adjacent to the Secretariat in Hyderabad in memory of the architect of the constitution. The statue will be unveiled on Friday. The KCR-led state government issued orders for constituting the Ambedkar Vigraha Aviskarana Committee, under the chairmanship of Kadiyam Srihari Garu the then Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Education. The committee was given the task of erecting Ambedkar’s statue at the hillock area of the NTR Garden premises. A technical committee was also constituted for the collection of relevant technical information from various organistaions for the erection of the 125 feet tall statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar under the chairmanship of Secretary to Government, SCD Department. During the construction of the above project, M/s Design Associates were hired as consultants by the government for the preparation of the detailed project report and as project management consultancy services. The consultants then prepared two alternatives (Circular and Square pedestals) and presented it for approval by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. The CM approved the circular base for the project.
