What Is a Neuron?

What is a Neuron? Neurons are the building blocks of the nervous system. They receive and transmit signals to different parts of the body. This is carried out in both physical and electrical forms. There are several different types of neurons that facilitate the transmission of information. The sensory neurons carry information from the sensory receptor cells present throughout the body to the brain. Whereas, the motor neurons transmit information from the brain to the muscles. The interneurons transmit information between different neurons in the body. Also Read: Neuron Structure A neuron varies in shape and size depending on its function and location. All neurons have three different parts – dendrites, cell body and axon. Parts of Neuron Following are the different parts of a neuron: Dendrites These are branch-like structures that receive messages from other neurons and allow the transmission of messages to the cell body. Cell Body Each neuron has a cell body with a nucleus, Golgi body, endoplasmic reticulum, Axon Axon is a tube-like structure that carries electrical impulse from the cell body to the axon terminals that pass the impulse to another neuron. Synapse It is the chemical junction between the terminal of one neuron and the dendrites of another neuron. Draw the structure of a neuron and explain its function.

Neurons are the fundamental unit of the nervous system. Neurons are also called as nerve cells. The main function of the neurons is to pass the receiving information and send appropriate signals to the rest parts of the body. The signals received are in the form of electrical signals. Neuron comprises of dendrite, axon and cell body. Dendrites receives messages from the surrounding and sends it to the cell body. Cell body consists of nucleus, mitochondria and other organelles. Axon transmits the message away from the cell body and pass it to the the next receiving neuron.

Neurons: Structure, Types, How They Work, Functions

There are three main types of neurons: • Motor neurons make the connection between the brain and muscles throughout the body. These neurons transmit electrical impulses containing information to skeletal muscles and smooth muscles. Motor neurons control all of our body movement. • Sensory neurons are neurons that let us feel sensation. If you burn your hand, sensory neurons will send chemical and electrical impulses back through the nervous system to let your brain know that you feel pain in your hand. • Interneurons are the nerve cells that connect motor neurons to other motor neurons and sensory neurons to other sensory neurons. • National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. • Faber DS, Pereda AE. Solution – neurons transmit information among the different areas of the brain and rest of the nervous system . Structure of the neuron – Cell body have dendrites which are responsible to receives the impulses from the nerve .. Axon is the tail of the nucleus which contains the nerve endings Around the axon is the myelin sheath which acts as a insulator The main function of the neuron is to transmit nerve impulses in a neuron and across the synapse into the other neuron .
