In the same judgment, the bench led by him talked about the existence of abusive relationships within marital institutions while giving legal recognition to the offense of marital rape for the first time. The bench ruled that forceful pregnancy of married women can be treated as “marital rape” for the purposes of abortion. In February 2020 he delivered a verdict that gave permanent commission to women in the armed forces. "The time has come for the realisation that women officers in the Army are not adjuncts to a male-dominated establishment whose presence must be 'tolerated' within narrow confines," Justice Chandrachud wrote in the judgment. 50th Chief Justice of India:President of India Droupadi Murmu on November 9, 2022, administered the oath of office to Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud as he took over as the 50th Chief Justice of India, replacing UU Lalit. President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice DY Chandrachud as the new chief justice of India in October 2022. His service will be effective from November 9, 2022, to November 10, 2024. Justice Chandrachud has become the 50th CJI and has succeeded Justice UU Lalit. Chandrachud is also the second most senior judge of the Supreme Court. Justice Chandrachud was elevated to the Bench of the Bombay High Court on March 29, 2000. He also held the office of Director of Maharashtra Judicial Academy. On October 31, 2013, Justice Chandrachud was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and elevated as the Judge of the Supreme Court of India on May 13, 2016. During his stellar career in law spanning three decades, Justice Chandrachud has been instrumental in bringing some of the most landmark judgments in the country.
