We traced an upside-down bowl onto our construction paper to get our “perfect” circles. You could also use paper plates if you had some just lying around waiting to be used for art or something. • Set out your materials Once you have your circle-shaped paper, set out an assortment of stickers and dive into making your mandala art. • Create your mandalas Apply the stickers in concentric circles or radiating designs. Or in any design you like! You can also cut stickers in half or into different shapes, if you like. In case you’re not familiar with mandalas, they are generally circular forms with radial symmetry. Think of a daisy blossom or a snowflake. Both are nature mandalas. Finally, if you are so inclined, add additional mandala detail with pens, markers, or any other drawing tool. Mandalas are beautiful geometric patterns. In my many years of teaching, I have found them to be a fantastic tool to inspire artistic exploration and children. They are also a fantastic mindful tool, and many people use them as an aid to meditation. For kids, they are a great way to experiment with form, color, and patterns, and a fantastic way to generate curiosity and talk. In this post, I’ll look at my favorite 22 mandala activities. 1. Mirror Books These are one of my all-time favorite loose parts activities, and they are brilliant for all kinds of open-ended mandala explorations. To create a mirror book, simply tape two safety mirrors together to create a ‘book’. I have created these mirror books out of both small and larger mirrors, and both work well. The finished ‘mirror book’ will look like this: Mirror books are a brilliant loose parts resource to stimulate awe and wonder You will also need a tray of some assorted loose parts (whatever you can find). I used a tinker tray that looked like this: Tinker trays of loose parts Prop the mirror book open, and then place different loose parts inside the mirror book. Explore what different patterns and imagery is created. If you open the mirror book out wide, you only get a few reflections. If you have the two mirrors quite close together, you create many multiple reflections. Do your kids love to paint with watercolors? They will have so much fun painting our Mandala watercolor art Take your watercolor art to the next level by making a watercolor mandala. This is a great project for kids of all ages. The older the child, the more intricate design they can make. Start little ones off with a very basic design, even if you draw it for them, and then have them paint it. Traditionally, mandalas are a circular design, but you can make yours in another geometric design if you like, but begin it with a circle. Supplies: • Watercolor paper • Compass • Protractor • Pencil • Watercolor paints • Water • Paintbrush Instructions: Use a rule to measure the center of your piece of paper, and then use the compass to draw a circle. The circle can be any size you like. I’d suggest somewhere between a 1/2 to 1 inch. From there I just started making more circles of different sizes. Use a combination of your protractor, compass, and freehand drawing to sketch your mandala. With so many lines and circles going on it can become difficult to see your vision. As I’m creating the mandala, I like to draw over the design with a fine black marker. You can see in the image below that I didn’t go over all of the lines, just those I wanted to keep. The remainder will get erased when I’m finished. Once you’ve finished drawing you mandala design, erase all of the remaining pencil lines. Now it’s time to get your watercolors out and paint.
