Qatar's new "shimmering diamond" soccer stadium completed

Construction has officially been completed on an eye-catching new stadium in Qatar. Created as part of the country's preparation for hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament, the building features a complex patterned facade that's said to shimmer in sunlight and can also be illuminated with integrated lighting at night. Nicknamed the Diamond in the Desert, the stadium derives its official title of Education City Stadium from its location next to several university and research buildings in Al Rayyan, west of Qatar's capital Doha. It was designed by Fenwick-Iribarren Architects in collaboration with Pattern Architects, Buro Happold, JPAC JV, and Salfo. The stadium will host World Cup matches up to the Quarter Final stage, after which its 40,000 capacity will be permanently reduced to 20,000 by removing seating. It features an oval form that's given definition by its metallic facade, which should lend it the shimmering appearance in the right conditions (though admittedly it doesn't look particularly shimmery in the photos provided). "The facade of the stadium is conceived as a shimmering diamond nestled on a vibrant landscaped podium," explains Pattern Architects. "The faceted nature of the metallic fabric facade has a strong geometric tessellation consisting of diamonds and triangles, which means each panel will reflect different qualities of light, sparkle with different hues, and mirror different aspects of the surrounding site. The movement of the sun throughou...

Education City Stadium: A perfect blend of Islamic architecture and modernity

Education City Stadium was inaugurated in June 2020 with a virtual event that paid tribute to frontline healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we take a closer look at the venue that will host matches up to the quarter-finals stage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, which will be held from 20 November to 18 December. Design Located 13km from central Doha, Education City Stadium is inspired by geometric shapes from Islamic architecture. The stadium façade features triangles forming complex, diamond-like geometrical patterns that change colour with the sun’s movement, illuminating the stadium in the evening. It is a perfect blend of Islamic architecture and modernity. “The geometric shapes actually support the stadium structure and act as holes, allowing air to enter the stadium and regulate its temperature,” said Ali Al Dosari, Facilities Management Director at Education City Stadium. Capacity The venue will host 40,000 fans during Qatar 2022. Transport Education City Stadium is easily accessible via the state-of-the-art Doha Metro. Fans will be able to reach the venue using the Doha Metro Green Line. Education City Station is located only 500m from the stadium. Legacy Surrounded by leading schools and universities, Education City Stadium will become a community hub for students and faculty post-2022. It is considered a great addition to existing sports facilities in Education City, such as Education City Golf Club. “During legacy mode, the stadium will be u...

Where is World Cup 2022? Exploring the host venue for FIFA's men's tournament in Qatar

The 2022 World Cup will create a new chapter in the competition's history, despite plenty of controversy over FIFA's decision to select Qatar as the host. The tournament will break new ground as the first World Cup to be held in the Middle East, with the world governing body making good on their long-declared commitment to stage the event in a region seen as key to the advancement of the global game. Many new stadiums have been constructed, as well as other infrastructure projects all over the country. The move has created plenty of talking points, not least the fact that high local average temperatures mean that the timing of the showpiece has been switched to November-December, as opposed to the traditional June-July major tournament window. But what else can we expect as the game's biggest spectacle takes in a brand new venue? MORE: Where is World Cup 2022 being held? Qatar is situated on the Arab peninsula and is one of the richest countries in the world. Why the Education City Stadium is Built to Last – Georgetown University in Qatar

Professor Danyel Reiche, Visiting Associate Professor at Georgetown University in Qatar, on why the World Cup venue in the heart of Qatar Foundation’s environment in knowledge can set a new standard for legacy and longevity. The Education City Stadium, which was officially opened in June and will host matches at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, is setting an exemplary standard for a legacy management program after a mega-sporting event. Previously, there had been a regrettable path dependency of the misuse of public resources at World Cups and Olympic Games: As in South Africa in 2010 and Brazil in 2014, the FIFA World Cup™ 2018 left ‘white elephants’ in the host country, Russia. White elephants are infrastructure – in this case stadiums – built for a mega-sporting event that have no long-term use and cause large maintenance costs that remain financial burdens for decades to come. Famous examples are the Montreal Olympic Stadium that hosted the 1976 Olympic Games and the Cape Town Stadium that was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Both stadiums lack local clubs to consistently fill them, and have brought significant maintenance costs to their municipalities. In the Middle East, an example of a white elephant is the Olympic Stadium in the Northern Lebanese city of Tripoli that was built for the 2000 AFC Asian Cup, although the local football club Tripoli SC keeps playing elsewhere, at Tripoli Municipal Stadium. A major reason for why white elephants happen is that the main...
