LetsTalkEducare!: Education is the movement from darkness to light.

Writing this blog I always think about the conditions in Valhalla Park, as I have first hand experience with how it is to grow up in a community that does not have the resources for young people to be educated and to look beyond their situation. When I speak about 'darkness', I am referring to the situations that hinder children from being educated and to have a brighter future. Children grow up not seeing the importance of education and all they see is their situations and that is what they think that they will end up with, and to my surprise they are just fine with that idea and thought. What I have noticed as well is that children model what older people do, for example, in a community with gangsterism young children from a very early age would model the gangsters and speak the way that they do and sometimes they would act in ways that model the way that gangsters act and behave. This is a problem because children grow up wanting to be gangsters and they end up dropping out of school. Education allows people/ children to move away from the darkness and move towards light, the light that I am referring to here, is success. Yes, it is possible to achieve success if you are a gangster, but being educated you achieve success in a way that is recognized. this is very important and valuable. Children need role-models that they can look up to and who they want to model. I wouldn't say that schools are failing to do their job, sometimes people think that schools are supposed to...

EDUCATION FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT

“Every day, early in the morning, I recite the words of the Rishi: TAMASO MA JYOTIR GAMAYA! “Out of Darkness lead me into Light!” And, I believe, the purpose of true education is even this- to lead us out of Darkness into Light. WHAT IS EDUCATION?Let us begin with a few known texts book definitions: 1.The composite activities of educating or instructing: activities that impart knowledge or skill, referred to as “teaching and learning.” 2.The knowledge acquired by learning and instruction, what students actually learn. 3.The gradual process, the holistic system through which such knowledge is acquired. 4.The profession of teaching. REFLECTION: While most of us would agree that education encompasses all of the above, we would also insist that there is something less definable and tangible, something more profound involved in education, the imparting not only of knowledge, but also awakening human qualities such as honesty, courage, sympathy, service, simplicity, humility, self-control, love of truth, discrimination, independent thinking, positive judgement and wisdom. We have to be very clear in our minds too, about what Education is not: 1.It is not the mere-acquisition of impressive degrees. 2.It is not filling the mind with book knowledge, statistics, facts and definitions. 3.It is not just about equipping the student to earn a living. 4.It is not merely sharpening the brain. 5.It is not gaining mastery of certain skills or certain subjects. WHAT IS TRUE EDUCATION “Educat...
