English Education in India: The Past, Present, and the Possible Future The introduction of English education in India, at least with a fervour hitherto unseen, can be accredited to Thomas Macaulay’s Minute from February 2, 1835. In his landmark proposal to the British Crown, Macaulay represented the kind of teaching that would prevail in India for the rest of British rule. Macaulay wanted to achieve certain targets for the education of Indians such as positioning English as the primary language for education and administration, dissemination of Western ideas for Indians so that they can further spread said ideas in their vernacular languages, and as Macaulay himself stated, “to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions we govern, a class of persons Indian in blood and colour but English in tastes, in opinions, in morals and in intellect” (116). This limited view of the capabilities of the Indian educated population displays the kind of biases that informed the imperial officers and the policies that thereafter shaped the policies of the colonial government regarding education in India. This view that regarded European thought, literature, and science to be superior to the so-called ‘Oriental imagination’ is rooted in an inability to understand and explore the ideas that a culture as rich as Indian culture could provide to the Europeans and the belief in a supposed superiority of European systems of knowledge.
