Ek Villain Returns Review: No chills & thrills in John Abraham, Disha Patani, Arjun Kapoor, Tara Sutaria film

Unfortunately, the movie doesn’t have much to offer in terms of thrills and chills that one would expect from a project like this. Ek Villain Returns is expected to be on the edge of the seat experience, but this one doesn’t give you that escapade. The filmmaker takes almost the entire first half to establish the characters, the back stories, and their contrast, resulting in expectations for the second half to speed up. However, the latter part of the film lacks pace and high points too. Story and screenplay writers Mohit Suri and Aseem Arora should have focused on that while working on the script. Certain dialogues penned by Aseem Arora describe the characters to the T, but beyond that most of them are easily forgettable. In terms of cinematography, Vikas Sivaraman’s lens has nothing new to offer, while action choreographed by Aejaz Gulab is also not unique. Some of them seemed to be forcefully choreographed in a larger-than-life style, just because it was to feature John Abraham. But it wasn’t in alignment with the most basic features of his character. In terms of violent scenes, the makers have taken too many creative liberties, which takes the film far away from reality. Background music by Raju Singh has a fluctuating graph, while overall music composed by Ankit Tiwari, Tanishk Bagchi and Kaushik-Guddu doesn’t stay with you after exiting the cinema hall. In terms of performances, On the face of it, Ek Villain Returns was a promising entertainer, but it is the overall ...

Ek Villain Returns Review: Mohit Suri makes a gripping watch but we missed Riteish Deshmukh

By Shweta Keshri: Ek Villain Returns is about a serial killer with a twisted self-rationalisation. He feels he is the torchbearer or messiah of one-sided lovers who is extracting their revenge by killing the girls they love. And he is doing all this for ratings. The bigger the murder, the more ratings he gets from his ladylove. Twisted, right? But most serial killers have twisted minds. Eight years after Rakesh Mahadkar's (Riteish Deshmukh) spine-chilling killings, another serial killer is on the loose, who is wreaking havoc in Mumbai. The film begins with the villain's return, who breaks into a high rise building by smashing the glass and killing and assaulting everyone who comes in his way until he gets hold of singer Aarvi (Tara Sutaria). Her murder is the big breaking news on every channel and spoilt brat Gautam Mehra (Arjun Kapoor) is accused of the crime. The story soon moves to a flashback where Gautam crashes his ex-girlfriend's wedding and creates a huge ruckus. However, when the girl declares that she still loves him, he tells the to-be groom that he can now marry her. Why? Because ' marna chalega par haarna nahi'. A video of Gautam's stunt is made viral by Aarvi, who turns his seeti-maar dialogues into a rap. He tracks her down and comes to know that she wants to be a singing sensation. He helps her sabotage another singer's career and make a place of her own. Earns her trust and love and, when the time is right, hits back at her for turning him into a viral mem...

Ek Villain Returns movie review: A misogynistic stalker is this film’s true hero

Remember the women who have been assaulted, stabbed, burnt or disfigured by stalkers? Mohit Suri’s Ek Villain Returns revisits crimes of this sort – from the perspective of the perpetrators. Suri’s slick storytelling, smart casting choices and a series of plot turns are laid at the service of a self-described “twisted love story”. Another descriptor comes to mind, one that begins with p, ends with e, and sounds similar to the word “obverse”. Arjun Kapoor is aptly cast as Gautam, a wealthy brat who lives by the credo “I would rather die than lose.” That said, Gautam survives the loss of his beloved well enough to latch onto upcoming singer Aarvi (Tara Sutaria). Their torrid romance is marked by ups and downs, which includes a faked rape attempt on Aarvi’s rival. After they break up, Aarvi is brutally attacked. Gautam is the obvious suspect, but forensic specialist Ganesan (JD Chakravarthy) has his doubts. Gautam’s path is set to cross with another wounded soul in Mumbai. Bhairav (John Abraham) has fallen hard for store assistant Rasika (Disha Patani) and spends his earnings on fulfilling her material needs. When he isn’t hunched behind a steering wheel, Bhairav works at the city’s zoo – an important detail as far as this film is concerned. Bhairav’s love for Rasika, presented as pure and selfless, sets up an encounter with Gautam, who is on the prowl for Aarvi’s attacker. There’s a great deal of talk about the true nature of heroism and villainy. The screenplay, by Mohit Su...

Ek Villain Returns movie review: Makes the original seem Oscar

There's a fight in the Metro. There's a fight in an old building. There's a fight on a busy road. But why are they fighting? The question lingers on for long while watching Mohit Suri's Ek Villain Returns. Touted to be a spiritual successor to his 2014 film Ek Villain, this sequel is far painful, pointless and psychotic. Clearly, it doesn't take just a bad story to make a below average film. In case of Ek Villain Returns, there's a lot more that contributed to the end result. Sluggish writing, lazy direction, half-baked characters and mindless twists all came together to make what could have been a nail-biting thriller, a rather boring watch. Ek Villain Returns movie review: Arjun Kapoor and John Abraham in still from the movie. And if this was not enough, you have four actors so terribly wasted here. Two macho men - A serial killer is on the prowl (badly missing Riteish Deshmukh here), and is ruthlessly killing young girls who have a twisted love story. Gautam (Kapoor) is a rich spoilt brat, who's has some sort of love-hate relationship going on with Aarvi (Sutaria), who we mostly see singing on the stage at open air theatre concerts. Cut to an intense, introvert taxi driver Bhairav (Abraham) who falls for Rasika (Patani), a salesgirl at a posh store who has a thing for materialistic pleasures. After a point, both Kapoor and Abraham are shown as jilted lovers and start moving around in peculiar ways. Mind you, nothing is clear by now who is the serial killer, who is the v...

Ek Villain Returns Ending Explained: Decoding How the Cameo in Mid

Ek Villain Returns Ending Explained: Decoding How the Cameo in Mid-Credit Scene of John Abraham, Arjun Kapoor and Disha Patani's Film Expands the 'Villain'-Verse (SPOILER ALERT) Ek Villain Returns has no plans to put a harpoon to the franchise's journey as seen in the mid-credit scene, that is not only a cliffhanger but also has an interesting (even if inexplicable) cameo. For the uninitiated, Ek Villain Returns is the sequel to the 2014 film Ek Villain, with both directed by Mohit Suri. The first film was a remake of the Korean thriller I Saw the Devil and starred Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh in the lead. The sequel is in existence of the first film, and acknowledges what happened there, but brings in new 'villains' and tells a new story. Ek Villain Returns stars John Abraham, Arjun Kapoor, Disha Patani and Tara Sutaria. Ek Villain Returns Movie Review: John Abraham, Arjun Kapoor, Disha Patani and Tara Sutaria's Film Is an Inferior Sequel to a Crummy Remake. Ek Villain Returns is about a serial killer who is targeting only those females who have left behind one-sided lovers, with a singer Aarvi (Tara) presumed to be his latest victim. The suspicion falls on her toxic ex-flame Gautam (Arjun Kapoor), but there is also a stony-faced cab driver Bhairav (John Abraham) and his sultry muse Rasika (Disha) who might have something to do with the killings. While Ek Villain Returns may not be the continuation of the first film per se, there comes a point a...

Ek Villain Returns Review {2.5/5}: The villain returns but not without his share of hiccups

Ek Villain Returns Story: Bhairav (John Abraham), a love-a-holic, is unable to fathom rejection from Rasika (Disha Patani), the woman he loves. Singer Aarvi (Tara Sutaria) is abducted from her home under mysterious-ominous circumstances. When her lover Gautam (Arjun Kapoor), blamed for her sudden disappearance goes looking for her, his path crosses with Bhairav, which leads to plenty of drama and action. Ek Villain Returns Review: Aarvi, a new singer on the block, has an unusual kind of a relationship with the rich and spoiled heir of a business empire, Gautam Mehra. She goes missing one night after a strange set of occurrences at her residence. The blame for it is pinned on her kabhi-ex-kabhi-current boyfriend Gautam. In the meanwhile, Bhairav, a taxi-driver circumstantially surfaces in the picture, connecting Aarvi, Gautam and him to a sequence of murders, kicking off a love-led action-drama. Whether Gautam manages to save the life of his ladylove forms the crux of the narrative. Director Mohit Suri’s film offers a simple story with several twists throughout the runtime, right till the last frame rolls in. Things slip on the editing table while treating the non-linear presentation of the story. One wishes this was paid a lot more attention to in order to create a better balance between the first and second halves of the film, to make it a more taut and gripping romantic thriller. While adding pace and spice to the screenplay and dialogues, the writers have missed on addi...
