Ek Villain Returns Review

Sukanya Verma had multiple migraines making sense of the utterly daft, warped and awful Ek Villain Returns. Mohit Suri's movies are a baffling beast. Though his world may deceptively resemble ours, look a little closer and it's an altogether different universe run over by aliens. I underwent multiple migraines making sense of his utterly daft, warped and awful Ek Villain Returns. Where Ek Villain ripped off South Korean thriller I Saw The Devil, Ek Villain Returns is a preposterous idea that should have never left Suri's head. If you wish to know beyond that 70-words review, read on. Two guys, two girlfriends, two chronologies -- Ek Villain Returns shifts back and forth between six months, three months and present day to chronicle beefcakes with beards and bad attitude and glam dolls flaunting their hourglass figures in outfits designed to do just that. Gautam (Arjun Kapoor) is a wayward brat in possession of all his dad's (Bharat Dabholkar) wealth despite the latter not wanting to part with it. We never learn why or how. When not gate-crashing an ex-girlfriend's wedding, he stalks an aspiring singer (Tara Sutaria) and paves the way for her career breakthrough by stalking her more famous rival and scaring her off. Aarvi (Sutaria) is a wannabe pop star sulking about her illegitimacy and dad's lack of acceptance. Both the existence of Gautam and Aarvi's romance and the reason for betrayal remain Ek Villain Returns' enduring mystery. On the other hand, Bhairav (John Abraham) ...

Ek Villain Returns Review: John Abraham

All good sequels have enough of the original to give us a sense of continuity but create enough difference to be able to stand on their own. Filmmaker Mohit Suri attempts to do it with Ek Villain Returns, a sequel to the 2014 sleeper hit Ek Villain, but fails miserably. Here’s a film which is a perfect example of how Ek Villain Returns kicks in only after the interval, and then it becomes the film it should have been from the get-go. The first half is a waste, even if it tries hard to get the audience invested into the characters who say dialogues which are straight out of ’80s Bollywood. Apart from being eye-candy, Aarvi (Tara Sutaria) is an upcoming singer, wanting to become famous and become a superstar singer. Gautam Mehra (Arjun Kapoor), a rich spoilt brat, falls for Aarvi and helps in achieving her goal. But wait, has he really fallen in love? At the same time there are a series of murders of young girls who have one-sided lovers, done by an unknown person who wants to become the messiah of boys who have lost in love. On the other hand, we have Bhairav (John Abraham), a cab driver who falls for Rasika (Disha Patani), a sales girl working in a departmental store. The stories of the four protagonists get intertwined with some interesting twists and plots. So now, it is left up to the audience to decide ki kaun hero aur kaun villain. Happy Birthday, Disha Patani: 7 Stunning Pics Of The Baaghi 2 Actress Suri is interested in themes of revenge, redemption, and especially ...

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 1 (ANI): Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor felt overwhelmed by seeing a Housefull board outside a cinema hall in Mumbai. Ek Villain Returns Is Just One Nonsensical Twist After Another

Ek Villain Returns prides itself in being one step ahead of the viewer – it's always a little worse than you think it is. One moment always manages to be more imbecilic than the previous one. One twist is always more nonsensical than the previous one. In fact, this is the sort of stunningly bad film that leaves you wondering whether you're impressed or defeated. It's hard to tell one feeling from the other on such days. Is cringing the same as reverse-grinning? There's a South Indian detective who yells "Shucks!" when he's upset – and he's only the 10 th worst thing about this film. There's a tiger in a zoo named Hero who only feasts on hacked-up female body parts – and this big kittycat is only the seventh daftest thing about this film. There's a rich man-child whose motto is "dying is better than losing"; who takes revenge on an ex by crashing her wedding, kissing her and then dumping her; who proves his love to a girl by 'jokingly' assaulting and traumatising her rival; who flirts with a woman by complimenting her bust size; whom Kabir Singh would be best buddies with – and he's only the fifth worst thing about this film. There's a docile cab driver who goes around targeting girls who break hearts because his cheating girlfriend's hormones rage at the sight of him being a toxic man and she then rates him in stars and smiley faces before having wild sex with him while sliding towards a cutting machine – and this bondage-forward couple is only the third worst thing about ...

Ek Villain Returns review: Mohit Suri’s answer to jilted straight Indian men

A serial killer and his girlfriend undress and join in furious embrace on a blood-drenched butcher’s table while a revolving cutter whirs next to them. This is after the girlfriend has rated him a full 10 on the job he has just completed: the smooth bludgeoning of his latest victim, a woman, followed by chopping her body to pieces. This is a scene that’s probably meant to shock or mortify audiences of Mohit Suri’s Ek Villain Returns, which he has called his “spirit sequel” to Ek Villain (2014). Throughout the 128 minutes of its running time, I couldn’t experience anything close to genuine mortification or unease or even sympathy for the serial killer’s victims, but this scene did extract some laughs out of sheer disbelief. That’s the kind of film Ek Villain Returns is—overblown, deranged, perverse and a thumping ode to wounded straight men who literally slay women to avenge their own heartbreaks. It’s a giant mansplaining disaster on the big screen. In the hands of a director genuinely invested in the terrifying nature of evil and what its implications can be on human life, the scene in question would’ve made its audience look away and wince. It could even have been sublime in a horrifying way. We’ve all seen Silence of the Lambs. Suri and his co-writer Aseem Arrora, and presumably the film's producers, incidentally both women, Ekta Kapoor and Shobhaa Kapoor, have only one agenda on their minds: We get your pain, women can be ruthless, go ahead and get your catharsis, kill...
