There are 35 seats up for election in the Senate. Of those, 21 currently belong to Republicans and 14 to Democrats. Republicans would need a net gain of one seat to win a majority in the Senate, which is currently held by Democrats with 48 senators, plus two independent senators who caucus with Democrats, and with Vice President Kamala Harris as the tie-breaking vote. All 435 U.S. House seats are up for election this year. Of those, 212 currently belong to Republicans and 220 to Democrats, with 3 seats vacant. Assuming Republicans retain the one vacancy formerly held by a Republican, the party would need a net gain of 5 seats to take the House majority back from Democrats.

In Jackson's third historic runoff, Mayor Scott Conger wins again

Incumbent Mayor Scott Conger was reelected Tuesday during his second consecutive run-off election, defeating mayoral candidate Ray Condray, according to final election results from the Madison County Election Office. The mayoral runoff is the third overall in the city of Jackson's history. Final results show Conger drew 5,304 votes, winning the top spot over Condray's 3,813 votes for city mayor, a nonpartisan race. With a 1,491 lead over Condray, Conger will continue to serve as Jackson's mayor for the next four years. Conger failed to draw at least 50.1% of the vote during the regularly scheduled city election on May 2, which led to the mayoral runoff against the second highest vote-getter, Condray. In May Conger drew 3,568 (or 46.95%) votes over Condray's 2,100 votes (or 29.31%), not quite reaching a majority of citizen votes required to win the mayoral election, per state law. The May 2 heavily contested election included six candidates vying for the mayoral seat, though Conger and Condray edged out the competitors, including educator Jerry Woods, city staffer Daryl K. Hubbard, Paul Sherrod, who was previously incarcerated during the election, and Lisa Williams-Lyons. Repeat of first term win Conger faced on Tuesday his second run-off in two consecutive election cycles. He previously ran against long-time educator Woods in the 2019 municipal election, ultimately winning by less than 800 votes. Woods faced Conger again in May but fell behind Conger and Condray as the thi...
