'Emergency Declaration' Ending, Explained: Is Anti

“Emergency Declaration” expertly merges adrenaline and serotonin as it takes us through the journey of a commercial airliner, the Sky Korea 501. Writer/director Han Jae-Rim does a good job of adding realism that reminds us of the tragedy that is human life. A biological terror attack on a plane brings out the real side of those people involved in the situation, both inside the plane and on land. At the end of it all, the film forces not just the characters in the film into submission but the viewers as well. Spoilers Ahead ‘Emergency Declaration’ Plot Synopsis: What Happens In The Film? Ryu Jin-seok, a senior researcher of microbiology at the multinational pharmaceutical firm BRICOM, slashes open his right underarm with a knife and shoves a small capsule inside. He then sews the skin back. He is in a bathroom at the Incheon airport, intending to board a flight that has the most passengers. He curses at an employee at the counter when she refuses to tell him how many people are headed to Hawaii. He then stumbles upon a father and daughter who are going to Hawaii. Park Jae-hyuk and his daughter Soo-min, who suffers from eczema, are about to board Sky Korea 501, which will take them to Honolulu, Hawaii, from Incheon, South Korea. At the airport, Park comes across a weird guy who asks him questions about his daughter. Finding the guy rather strange, Park avoids answering him and heads toward the gate with his daughter. First Officer Choi Hyun-soo, the pilot of Sky Korea 501, n...

Emergency Declaration (2022) Review

“Emergency Declaration” Theatrical Poster Director: Han Jae-Rim Cast: Song Kang-Ho, Lee Byung-Hun, Jeon Do-Yeon, Kim Nam-Gil, Im Si-Wan, Kim So-Jin, Park Hae-Joon, Kim Bo-Min, Hyun Bong-Sik, Seol In-A, Lee Yeol-Eum Running Time: 141 min. By Paul Bramhall The disaster movie has become something of a regular fixture in Korean cinema over the last 15 years. We’ve had colossal tidal waves in 2009’s Haeundae, towering infernos in 2012’s The Tower, nuclear meltdowns in 2016’s Pandora, and most recently the threat of unthinkable volcanic destruction in 2019’s Ashfall. Understandably, the COVID-19 pandemic that ravaged 2020 and 2021 has seen film goers appetite for the disaster genre on the wane, so 2022’s Emergency Declaration hopes to recapture audiences fondness for big budget chaos by taking it to the skies. How much sense that makes will likely depend on audiences willingness to separate fiction from reality. With a story that involves a disgruntled lab worker releasing a highly contagious virus on a packed flight to Hawaii, with so much talk of how easy a virus can spread in the confined environment, it may not exactly be what everyone wants to see as the world begins to re-open to travel. Of course everything is relative, so ultimately such concerns will likely only apply to those watching Emergency Declaration at the time of its release. What can’t be argued though is that director Han Jae-rim ( The King, The Face Reader) has brought onboard an all-star heavyweight cast, a...

SYNOPSIS: While investigating a terroristic threat that goes viral online, Korean authorities discover that a suspect has recently boarded an international flight bound for the United States. With steadily decreasing fuel and international refusals to offer aid, the captain and crew will be forced to take unprecedented emergency measures in an attempt to save the lives of theirpassengers. An opening title card informs viewers that an issued “emergency declaration” means something has gone so wrong that the pilot has free reign to land an aircraft ASAP. The only thing that matters in the skies is landing that plane safely, even if it disrupts the routes of other planes. Shockingly, such a declaration is not made here until nearly 100 minut...

Emergency Declaration Movie Review: Nerve

Isn't it frustrating when an antagonist sometimes doesn't reveal his motive? I don't necessarily mean it's a bad thing. Take The Dark Knight, for example. Remember the Michael Caine line about some men wanting to watch the world burn? How you can't buy, bully, reason or negotiate with them? Remember how the Joker became a litmus test of sorts -- to measure the character of everyone who was part of his little 'experiment'? Im Si-wan, the antagonist in Korea's latest disaster movie, Emergency Declaration, treads similar lines. After the 50-min mark, something happens that, suffice to say, doesn't necessarily require him to be an active participant because by then, the damage becomes difficult to undo. His little 'experiment' is doing everything for him inside a Korean flight bound for Hawaii. A bio-terrorist with a quiet disposition, Si-wan generates enough menace and creepiness to make us want to punch him in the face, right from the opening scene of him at an airport counter making enquiries about the flight that later becomes the film's prime focus. Director: Han Jae-rim Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video Be warned that this is not an ideal movie to watch when one is under the weather. Let me tell you why. Had Emergency Declaration been released during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, it would've been an extremely distressing experience. Even now, when the situation has improved after two years of panic, Emergency Declaration turned out to be quite a terrifying experienc...
