Ashes 2023: England's Emma Lamb says Australia are 'human' and 'not perfect'

Australia will defend the Ashes they have held since 2015 in a multi-format series this summer. "They are humans. It is within our reach to beat them. We just have to do everything well," Lamb told BBC Sport. Meg Lanning's Australians have won three of the past four Ashes series, with one draw. Earlier this year they won their third successive T20 World Cup following a 2022 when they took the 50-over world title and Commonwealth Games gold. Lamb, 25, added: "They are an incredible team who have achieved a lot in the last two years. They have a lot of talented players. "Coming off the Women's Premier League and some of the girls playing with them, we've come to the conclusion they are not perfect. We definitely have a chance of competing with them." England have been preparing for the Ashes with a three-day team-bonding trip in the Lake District. The men's version of the Ashes begins on 16 June with the first of five Tests, while the women's competition, comprising a Test, three one-day internationals and three T20s, starts on 22 June. Four points are on offer for winning the Test and two each for victory in a white-ball match. For the first time in the UK, the women's Test is taking place over five days, increasing the chance of a result and therefore the likelihood one of the teams will open up a big lead. "It will create a lot of pressure," said Lamb. "One team can go far ahead and another could be playing catch-up. "It's incredibly important. To get off to a good start ...

England v South Africa: Emma Lamb one of five uncapped players chosen

Lamb, who was part of the squad that reached the World Cup final, will join Tammy Beaumont at the top of the order. Three pace bowlers - Emily Arlott, Lauren Bell and Freya Davies - come in for retired pair Katherine Brunt and Anya Shrubsole. All-rounder Alice Davidson-Richards is also included in the 13-strong party. The four-day Test, beginning on Monday, forms part of a multi-format series, with three one-day internationals and three Twenty20s to follow. It will be the first time since 2008 that England have played a Test without both Brunt and Shrubsole. Brunt announced on Saturday that she has retired from Test cricket but will continue to play limited-overs internationals, while Shrubsole ended her international career after the World Cup. Neither Bell, 21, nor 24-year-old Arlott have played any international cricket, but Davies, 26, has won 24 caps across the white-ball formats. Like Davies, 24-year-old Lamb played in one match of England's World Cup campaign and also comes with the option of some part-time off-spin. Davidson-Richards, 28, has not played for England since 2018, when she featured in one ODI and five T20s. Eight of England's XI from their last Test - the drawn Ashes match in Australia - are retained. Opener Lauren Winfield-Hill, who was dropped during the World Cup, misses out. She is part of an England A squad to take on the tourists in a three-day match at Arundel from Tuesday. England head coach Lisa Keightley said: "There are a number of new faces...
