England vs. New Zealand 3rd Test highlights and analysis from Day 2 as Bairstow century leads stunning fightback

HEADINGLEY, LEEDS — Jonny Bairstow made it back-to-back centuries as he led a thrilling England counter-attack on day two of the third Test against New Zealand at Headingley. On the back of his stunning match-winning century at Trent Bridge that gave Ben Stokes' side an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, Bairstow reached stumps on 130 not out before his adoring Yorkshire public. Debutant Jamie Overton (89 not out) will chase an unlikely Test hundred on Saturday morning after guiding England to 264/6 in response to New Zealand's 329 all out— an astonishing recovery from 55/6 in the 12th over. A magnificent new-ball burst from Trent Boult accounted for Alex Lees, Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley, all clean bowled, before Tim Southee had Joe Root caught behind. Stokes inexplicably holed out to Neil Wagner and Ben Foakes was trapped lbw in the same over, leaving Bairstow and Overton to take centre stage. Bairstow brought up three figures from 95 balls, clinically driving down the ground for the 15th of 21 fours so far, while Overton clattered a pair of mighty sixes alongside 12 fours in England's highest ever seventh-wicket stand of 209 and counting. Earlier, Daryl Mitchell scored his third century of the series before Jack Leach wrapped up the tourists' first innings with his first five-wicket haul on home soil.
