England vs South Africa, 2nd Test Highlights: England beat South Africa by an innings and 85 runs

Ben Stokes the skipper of England, is the Player of the Match. He says it has been incredible to play here at Manchester, and James Anderson bowling from his own end is even more special. Adds this victory has given them a lot of confidence and now the series is set up nicely. On Zak Crawley he says that he played incredibly and negotiated the new ball brilliantly, he set the innings for them. On Ben Foakes he says that he should be receiving this award, as he has been incredible with the bat and behind the stumps. When asked about Ollie Robinson, he says that it's good to have him back, and to see him perform well it's even better. He is a quality bowler. Ben Stokes states that he just adapted himself to the pitch and to the conditions. He had a positive mindset while coming to bat, which always helps them. Says that his knee is in good condition, he adds that he wanted to bowl with the old ball and bring the other pacers only once the new ball was taken. Dean Elgar the skipper of South Africa is down for a chat. He says that England were far better than them through the 3 days and he congratulates them for their victory. Adds that he has no regrets about his decision on team selection or even selecting to bat first. Further says that the first innings score is always important but they failed to put that on the board, and let them down. Adds that there are a lot of positives and learnings to take from this game. They have a few days before the next game and they will reg...

This was a grim reality check for the Ben Stokes revolution

• • South Africa marked this famous win with a team photograph in front of the Lord’s pavilion not long after tea should have been taken on day three of the Test. By then the England revolution had been halted in its tracks as effectively as the Tube strike had crippled London’s transport on Friday. South Africa, winners by an innings and 12 runs, inflicted the first defeat of the Ben Stokes era and what a walloping it was too, England bowled out for 149 and their two innings lasting just 496 balls – or 82 overs – basically a day’s play (at modern over-rates). Only twice before have England lost so quickly at home. Those defeats were either in Victorian times or against a great West Indian attack but you suspect that under Stokes England's wins and losses will be of the spectacular variety. Dean Elgar had told his players before the match to be inspired by Lord’s, not daunted, and their team photograph will hang with pride in Cape Town, especially if they can go on and win the series. Elgar warned his side had improved and he was good to his word, as the tourists' outstanding attack exposed old England failings. The top three are jittery and vulnerable on pitches that help the pace bowlers and when Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow have quiet Tests - they contributed 32 runs in four innings here - the shallowness of England’s batting becomes evident. Stokes’s one-paced batting – 100mph – has only come off in one Test at Trent Bridge this summer and Ben Foa...

Just full enough, just enough nip back, and pop go the bails! Roy's return to form is cut short after one innings. He was set up here, two kicking up wide of off and then one fuller and angling in, slides through the gate as Roy aims a drive and just pings the off bail. 27/1 16.3 toBM Duckett, huge heave down the ground... but not huge enough! Duckett doesn't take much of a look, takes a two-step down the pitch, swinging violently across the length, but the bat skews on impact, he loses power, and the substitute takes a simple chance at wide long-on, five metres in from the rope. 82/3 Aiden Markram 4 0 26 1 6.50 10 2 1 0 1 27.2 toHC Brook, holes out in the deep! Massive moment in this match, Markram tosses one up outside off, Brook goes for the big inside-out drive but opens the face too soon, skews a leading edge high out to deep cover. A fine innings ends tamely, and suddenly England's acceleration into the back end of the inni...

England have been in sensational Test form this summer, already Almost all of their star cast has reassembled for the Test series against South Africa. Stokes returns to lead the side. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow, meanwhile, are part of the team and would be hoping to build on what has already been an immensely successful red-ball season. However, with Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen around, they would be confident of offsetting the absence of Rabada, if it comes to that. Injury has also ruled Duanne Olivier out of the series. Zak Crawley ended 69 not out, with Ollie Pope unbeaten on 11 after Alex Lees was lbw on review to Kagiso Rabada for 39. Victory was earned in little more than two days of play after day one was washed out and day two cancelled as a mark of respect following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It gives captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum a sixth win from seven Tests in their first summer in charge, a complete turnaround from England's previous run of one win in 17. Only once before have England won more than five Tests in a home summer, when they took a clean sweep of seven victories in 2004. South Africa miss out on the chance to return to the top of the table in the World Test Championship, where they are vying with Australia, India and Pakistan for a place in the final. The defeat ends the Proteas' run of four Test series unbeaten. An almost entirely different England squad now turns its attention to preparations for the T20 World Cup in Australia in October, with a seven-match series in Pakistan beginning on 20 September. England's winter Test assignments are in Pakistan in December and New ...
