Kerala Village First to Become Carbon Neutral Village in India

As many nations contemplate whether to ratify the Paris agreement, while global powers appear reluctant to devise solutions to combat drastic climate change, while countries, governments, NGOs, interest groups and individuals become increasingly involved in addressing this global challenge and as Earth became witness to its hottest months ever recorded in 2016, a small village named Meenangadi in Wayanad District in Kerela quietly became the 1st carbon neutral village in India. The Meenangadi story Meenangadi Panchayat, which resides in a unique ecosystem in the Western Ghats towards northern Kerala, initiated an ambitious project to become carbon neutral by 2020. The project was initiated on June 5, 2016, as part of World Environment Day and in the past one year with a committed, innovative and strategic method, the panchayat and all its inhabitants have been able to achieve considerable progress towards one of the most enduring missions in the country. At the start of the carbon neutral project, representatives of the Kannur zoology department reached the panchayat and conducted an assessment on the carbon levels in the soil, plants etc. This was followed by a 20-day survey by representatives of Kerala Agricultural University to identify panchayat wards on the basis of carbon levels to further strategize and streamline project initiatives and activities. This Town in Kerala Will Be the First Carbon Neutral Panchayat in State

Despite being a small town in Wayanad district, the region is incredibly bio-diverse (being a part of the Western Ghats). And numerous peoplefrom different backgrounds are coming together to ensure that this project is successful by 2020. This includes students, scientists and also people’s representatives. The prime minister said that Palli has shown the way to the country for achieving carbon neutral state. "People of Palli has helped in the project. They have also provided food to people engaged in the project," he said. In all 1,500 solar panels put up on the total area of 6,408 square metres will provide clean electricity to 340 houses in the model panchayat under the central government's ‘Gram Urja Swaraj' programme, officials said. The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of Ratle and Kwar Hydroelectric projects. "Projects worth ₹20,000 crore related to connectivity and electricity have been inaugurated here today. In a bid to speed up the development in Jammu and Kashmir, many development initiatives are being taken up in the Union Territory," said PM Modi. Manikkal Gears Up To Become Carbon Neutral

Thiruvananthapuram: Manikkal panchayat in the district has started a slew of initiatives to achieve carbon-neutral status. From conducting carbon audits to planning an extensive project to plant one lakh saplings within the panchayat, Manikkal is setting a new model for social, economic and environmental development by understanding the environmental problems of each area, finding solutions and implementing them rapidly. To start off, the entire panchayat has been divided into different zones like government institutions and residential houses to check carbon footprint. Energy efficiency measures will be introduced at each zone. Proper waste disposal of plastic and dry leaves will also be ensured. The second project of planting trees is being carried out in four phases. As part of phase one, the plan is to complete planting 10,000 trees in 100 houses across all 21 wards of the panchayat. The objective is to plant a total of 1 lakh trees which includes 60,000 saplings in houses and 40,000 in public spaces.
