The Flag of Russia: History, Meaning, and Symbolism

The National Flag of Russia, also known as the State Flag of the Russian Federation, is a significant emblem of Russia. It is a straightforward, equally proportioned three-color Flag of Russia History The Russian flag has a long history and has undergone a few changes. The first official Russian Empire flag was a tricolor flag with three horizontal sections: black on the top, yellow in the center, and white on the bottom. It was declared by Alexander II in 1858, and it remained in use until that time. The white, blue, and red tricolor were once again designated as the Russian Empire’s official flag by an order dated 1896. The Russian SFSR chose a new flag in 1991 after the August Coup when the Soviet Union began to fall apart. It was symbolic of the pre-revolutionary tricolor that had been made illegal in 1917. In a resolution dated August 22, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of the Russian SFSR recognized the historic imperial tricolor flag to be the nation’s flag. This was in response to the aftermath of the failed coup in Moscow. On November 1, 1991, Law No. 1827-1 was passed, and it subsequently changed the constitution. The current tricolor flag was raised in the Kremlin on December 25, 1991, the day the USSR began to disintegrate. The new flag had a 1:2 ratio and was composed of three colors: whi...

History of the Flag of Russia Over Russia's history, several flags have been flown within the Russian nation. One of the oldest banners the Russian army used was the banner of Ivan the terrible, whose rule over the entire country lasted from 1547 to 1584. The banner outlasted his rule as it would later be used by other rulers such as Tsarina Sophia Alekseevna and Peter the Great in different campaigns. Another military banner that was used in Russia's history belonged to Dmitry Pozharsky and was used by the Nizhny Novgorod militia. During the reign of Peter the Great, the flag of Moscow's Tsar was first raised on a ship. The flag at this point was comprised of three colors blue, red, and white. The colors chosen were of great significance as the red symbolized the Russian citizens, the blue symbolized the Russian monarch, and the white represented God. The colors used in the flag were a significant source of inspiration for the Pan-Slavic colors. The tricolor flag was regularly used on Russian ships and in 1883 was officially ap...

Red, blue and white are considered traditional Pan-Slavic colors and wide number of states adopted them in the 19th century since Russia was at that time the only independent Slavic state. During the rule of the Communist Party, the tricolor was replaced by the red flag with a hammer and a sickle in the upper left part of the flag. After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Kremlin decided to return to traditional tricolor. There are many theories explaining the symbolism of the tricolor. Russian Flag

First flag of Russia It is believed that until the 17th century, there was no official state flag in Russia. The first mention of it is associated with Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov (the second tsar from the Romanov dynasty). In 1668, following the European tradition, he ordered to raise the flag over the first Russian warship named “Eagle” (Орёл). There is no exact information about what the first flag looked like, but it is known that red, white and blue fabrics were purchased for its production. According to one of the versions, a double-headed eagle was also depicted on the flag. 25 years later, in 1693, the son of Alexei I, Peter I (Peter the Great) used the “flag of the Tsar of Moscow” which consisted of three horizontal stripes (white, blue and red) while sailing on the White Sea. A golden two-headed eagle was in the center of the flag. It is considered that on that day the Russian fleet (and de facto the Russian state) got its official flag. Flag of the Tsar of Moscow. White-blue-red scarves were part of the officer’s uniform of the early 18th century. It is worth mentioning that in 1712, the navy began to use a white flag with an azure cross (St. Andrew’s flag), created in honor of the Order of the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called. The layout of the flag was created personally by Peter I. Sudden changes: ne...
