It is also used together with olanzapine to treat depression that is part of bipolar disorder and treatment resistant depression in patients who have received at least 2 previous treatments but did not work well. Fluoxetine is an antidepressant and belongs to a group of medicines known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This medicine works by increasing the activity of a chemical called serotonin in the brain. This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription. This product is available in the following dosage forms: • Capsule, Delayed Release • Syrup • Tablet • Capsule • Solution

This medicine should come with a Medication Guide. Follow the instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions. You may take the medicine with or without food. You may have to take fluoxetine for a month or longer before you begin to feel better. If you are using the oral liquid, shake the bottle well before measuring each dose. Measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup. A regular household teaspoon will not measure the proper amount of medicine. Dosing The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so. The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine.
