In light of the mounting challenges of climate change, pollution and the continuous growth of the world’s population, the ocean assumes an even more critical role in helping secure our future food supply, explained Manuel Barange, FAO’s Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division.

The full form of FAO is Food and Agriculture Organization. It is an agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to combat hunger and promote sustainable agriculture. Founded in 1945, FAO is one of the oldest specialised agencies of the UN and works with Governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to improve nutrition, incomes, and quality of life for the most vulnerable. FAO works with governments, private sector, and civil society to improve production, management and quality of agricultural services. Its work focuses on three main areas: agricultural production, intelligence, and policy and strategic planning. To achieve its goals, FAO produces reports, policy guidelines, a wide range of research, and technical advice on sustainable agricultural development. It also provides critical guidance on nutrition, food security and climate-smart agriculture. FAO’s work is driven by the belief that agricultural growth has the potential to achieve food security and poverty reduction. FAO works to address global challenges such as climate change, hunger, malnutrition, and population growth. It helps countries to strengthen their agricultural sectors and open markets for food and agricultural exports. It also works to end conflict, poverty and hunger worldwide. As a result, FAO is a key stakeholder in the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to end hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2030.

All consumers have the right to expect and demand safe, good quality food. A lack of food safety assurance can lead to failure of food businesses and destroy national food sectors. Food safety/quality management and assurance systems along the supply chain ensure that food businesses can keep food safe. This set of preventative controls may include Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Good Practices on Animal Feeding, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Good Hygiene Practices (GHPs) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems. In particular small scale producers and traders in developing countries need support in planning and implementing food safety management programmes in line with internationally recognized standards. FAO’s Work on GHP & HACCP FAO promotes the application of preventive food safety management systems by food business operators along the food chain in line with Codex guidelines and recommendations.
