Gangaur Ghat also known as Gangori Ghat is one of the most fascinating ghats in Udaipur located at the shore of A ghat is a location along the shores of a lake or river where locals bathe and wash their clothes. Ghats are also used by locals to celebrate Hindu festivals in India. Gangaur Ghat is without a doubt one of the most scenic and beautiful places in Udaipur. It was originally named after Udaipur’s most popular local festival, Gangaur. It is just a few minutes drive from any part of the city and is located in the heart of the city by the side of Lake Pichola. Although getting to the ghat on a four wheeler can be difficult at times. It’s even more amazing in the evening, when all the streets and houses are lit up. Another ghat known as Ambrai Ghat is located on the opposite end of the lake. The JalJhulni Gyaras or JalJhulni Ekadashi are a popular event around Gangaur Ghat. On each day of the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha) and the waning moon (Krishna Paksha), different processions begin in different parts of the city and end at Gangaur Ghat, it is the place where people swing the idols of Lord Krishna in the form of Child (Baal Gopal) on Lake Pichola. In fact the festival is mainly in honour of Gauri, symbolising conjugal happiness. Single women pray to Gauri to find a good husband while married women pray for a happy married life. Women and girls carrying the effigies of Shiva and Gauri, Udaipur Women put on their finest jewellery for the festival, and new, colourful saris – often red, the colour of marriage in India. They decorate the palms of their hands and feet with mehndi (henna). In some areas the women and girls fast during the festival, eating only once a day. A trip to Udaipur is never fulfilled without a visit to the Gangour Ghat located along the Banks of Lake Pichola. Though the Lake is dotted with numerous Ghats, Gangour Ghat is the most popular of all. This is due to its proximity to various 'Must See' places of old Udaipur like the Market and Udaipur Fort. There is a paid parking place at the entrance to the Ghat. Entry into the Ghat is free. The best time to visit is during Sunrise or Sunset. The place is a Shutterbugs delight with the well lit landscape of the opposite Bank with its shimnering reflections into the azure waters providing a smacking scenery. Sitting on the huge granite steps leading to the river, one can enjoy a romantic interlude with nature. Though the cleanliness of the place leaves a lot to be desired, a monumental share of the blame lies with We, The Tourists. A visit to this spot which is at tge edge of the old city is unmissable.
