This article is in continuation to a previous one and a part of my Northeast trip log. The post below talks about our journey from Gangtok to Nathula Pass. In the previous days, we visited Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong village, Sibsagar, Kaziranga National Park, Darjeeling, and also attended the famous Hornbill Festival of Nagaland in Kohima. Journey So Far: • • • • • • • • • • The most awaited day had arrived. At first, I was skeptical about Gangtok to Nathula Pass in winter because of snowfall and roadblocks. I thought it would be like Rohtang pass, closed in winters. But then I came to know that it is maintained throughout the year, like Khardung La in Ladakh. Today we were to travel some 110 km covering Gangtok to Nathula Pass, Baba Harbhajan temple, and Chango lake. Gangtok to Nathula is 52 km. Chango lake falls on the way, and Harbhajan mandir bifurcates from the highway 4 km before the border. At a distance of 2 km from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station, Observatory Hill is a hill top located near Chowrasta Square in the dreamy hill town of Darjeeling. Nathula takes about 3 hours (about 60 kms) to reach from Gangtok. You will pass Tsongmo lake on your way to Nathula. I would suggest that you do visit the lake on your way back from Nathula. It is beautiful. Please read my reviews for Nathula and Tsongmo for more details. The weather conditions are quite erratic so its best you leave around 7am in the morning and try to reach by 10am. I had visited Nathula with my parents (both early sixties) in December 2015. The climb is short but steep and takes toll on people from all age groups. My father found it bit difficult to breathe initially but he took deep breaths and made his way up very slowly. Please do not push yourself if you do not feel confident. You might want to hire a taxi from STDC (Sikkim Tourism and Development Corporation), located in the main market. It costed us around INR 4300 inclusive of the permit. We hired an Innova. You will need to give STDC your passport size photos in person for the permit (along with copies of your passport which could be emailed). They would need at least half a working day to process your application for a permit. Please plan accordingly. Go in for a good vehicle like Innova and a good driver. Maximum time is 4 hours to reach Nathula Pass. Tsomgo lake is on the way to Nathula. Carry fix or camphor to ease yourself in case of heavy breathing.
