Our first visit to North East, more precisely Gangtok, Sikkim was interesting. Want to make this review helpful for families and will cover multiple aspects. First, travel from Badogra to Gangtok. While a helicopter option was available, we chose the road. Majority of the distance of about 120 kms winds through the hills (West Bengal & Sikkim). Add to that the traffic and stops for food, budget anywhere between 4-5 hours for the journey! Most of the road follows the gushing Teesta river. Food outlets are available en route. Those who have motion (moutain) sickness need not be too worried. The roads are not as winding as some in Himachal or the Nilgiris. Coming to Gangtok itself, I was surprised for two reasons - the crowd & the traffic!!! Never seen such a rush in a hill station. Perhaps it was peak season yet... The most happening place in Gangtok is MG Market. Shops of all types abound here. Food outlets in plenty with some options for vegetarians. We liked Rasoi (STDC) & Food Court. Local Commute is only by Taxi (share). Gangtok has strict policing so there's significant traffic discipline. Yet you have to negotiate fare often. A lot of places to stay near this market but the choice is individual. Nathula pass visit is a must. One could feel stuffy due to the height but most people managed well.
