Vikrant Massey on Gaslight and more: Sara Ali Khan is a livewire

What was it about Gaslight that caught your attention? The script to begin with. It was such a lovely read. It engaged me as a reader. And by the time I finished reading it, I realized that it had tremendous potential to be adapted into a feature film. It also offered me a part or a character that I have never done before. There was an opportunity for me to go out and explore myself as an actor. Also, director Pawan Kirpalani and I wanted to work together for a long time. Sara Ali Khan was also one of the reasons to sign the film. So, there were quite a lot of factors. It was lovely. I couldn’t have asked for better co-actors. We all have such different personalities so to come under one roof and utilize them for the benefit of the story and narration was great. Sara is a livewire. There’s a certain amount of energy that she brings on set. Chitra ma’am was so poised, calm and hardworking at the same time. I was lucky to work with them and I took bits and pieces from both, which I will try to retain as long as I can. On OTT, an actor's performance or their show/movie gets recognition sooner or later. But commercial success can be a little elusive. How much does commercial success matter to you right now? What exactly is commercial success? Is it the money you make? If that is the case then all my films have been commercial successes. None of my producers have lost money pre or post-pandemic. The definition of commercial success has changed. It's no longer what it used to be...

Gaslight Review: Sara Ali Khan Tries Her Best To Save This Boring & Uncanny Murder Mystery

Mystery/Thriller Director: Pavan Kirpalani Starring: Sara Ali Khan, Vikrant Massey, Chitrangada Singh New Delhi: Get ready to watch Sara Ali Khan getting out of her comfort zone. She has moved on from comedies and romances to horror and tired mysteries. The narrative of this Disney+Hotstar flick ‘Gaslight’ may not blow you away, but it will definitely keep you interested throughout. ‘Ragini MMS’ director Pavan Kirpalani again shows his speciality in combining psychological themes with aspects of terror and suspense. The film would get high marks if ideas alone counted, but in reality, it’s a failed attempt at making a whodunnit. Based on the film's pacing and its early attempts at creating a horror movie atmosphere (with unnecessary horror elements), ‘Gaslight’ is like the 2000s horror genre. Sara Ali Khan plays a young girl named Meesha with paraplegia (Paralysis of the lower half of the body). She is a royal descendant who came to meet his father 15 years after she last saw him. Chitrangda Singh (Rukmini) is her stepmother and Vikrant Massey (Kapil) is her father's aide. The murder mystery is set in a gorgeous but haunted mansion in Rajasthan. Meesha encounters many bizarre and terrible events, and the rest of the film follows the same tune. Throughout the end of the movie, she keeps looking for answers about her missing father. After seeing unusual behaviour at the palace, Meesha begins to investigate. Even when she begins seeing her deceased father's ghost and reportin...

‘Gaslight’ movie review: Sara Ali Khan’s spook

A murder mystery that invests more in mood than matter, Gaslight sparks interest with its setting and sharp twists but eventually turns out to be a rather insipid whodunit. Director Pavan Kirpalani, who, over the years, has found a way into the dark recesses of the human mind, once again generates a sense of dread and foreboding. Here he has joined hands with the makers of films like Raaz and Naqaab to create a palatial intrigue that is superficially pegged on mental health. Storyline: A young woman played by Sara Ali Khan returns to her family’s royal estate, only to find that her father is missing Meesha (Sara Ali Khan) returns to her royal estate after 15 years only to find that her father Ratan Singh Gaikwad is missing. A series of events make the wheel-chair bound Meesha feel that her stepmother Rukmini (Chitrangda Singh) is hiding the truth and is manipulating her into thinking that she is mentally unstable with the help of her admirers that include Meesha’s distant cousin Rana Jai Singh (Akshay Oberoi) and a police officer Ashok Tanwar (Rahul Dev). As she decides to dig out the root of her fear, Meesha finds help in the form of her father’s manager Kapil (Vikrant Massey) but soon discovers that there is more to the mystery than her father’s pet dog Commander could smell or the stepwell in the house could hold. Sara Ali Khan: I don’t associate myself as a royal It starts as a well-crafted thriller but as we scratch our way through cobwebs, we find it is the same old ...

Sara Ali Khan, Vikrant Massey, and Chitrangda Singh's Gaslight movie review

Sara Ali Khan thanks the audience for their love and shares a BTS clip from the Zara Hatke Zara Bachke shooting days Vicky Kaushal describes his marriage to Katrina Kaif as ‘parantha weds pancakes’: ‘She loves paranthas my mom makes’ The opening scene of Gaslightsuggests we are going to come back to this moment, and the story will inform us how it all happened, and why it happened. This is something that has been happening for long now, where the screenplay is written such that we see the same scene twice, once as a glimpse, and when all the clutter is pieced together. Think of Sriram Raghavan’s Andhadhun, which began, and also (almost) ended with a car crash and a gun shot gone wrong. The story is about a wheel-chair bound girl Meesha, played by Raat Akeli Haiish, sans the carefully crafted complexities of the characters. It never digs deep, only throws information to us about who’s what and why so. Sara Ali Khan What does impress is how director Pavan Kirpalani saves some of his better stuff for the film and not for the trailer. There are some jolting shots and jump scare moments one wasn’t really prepared for. The film begins to veer into the territory of horror after what seemed merely a thriller. The camerawork too works in favor of the atmospheric tension of the narrative, as it lingers on almost all the corners of the mansion, especially some demonic and devilish paintings on the wall. Given Kirpalani is the man behind the 2011 sleeper-hit Ragini MMS, he knows a thi...

Gaslight Review: Sara Ali Khan, Vikrant Massey wasted On dumb Whodunnit

By Mar 31, 2023 I find it quite perplexing that the majority of suspense thrillers take the shape of whodunits before adding scary components. Even the spooks are confined to jump scares, dim illumination, shadowy figures, a lantern on the floor, and a piano that plays by itself. I’m talking about the true horror films at the time, Band Darwaza (1990) and Veerana (1988). Nothing novel is offered by Gaslight. If anything, it makes you uneasy and smile in spots where you think someone was trying to terrify you. The movie’s main premise isn’t all that horrible, but the execution and the first 15 minutes, which are completely predictable, destroy the whole thing. Gaslight Movie Review: The film stars Chitrangada Sen, Sara Ali Khan and Vikrant Massey. Whodunits and murder mysteries are my personal favorites, but they need to be well-written and skillfully filmed. You can’t expect the audience to watch such a terrible movie for two hours. While director Pawan Kripalani had previously given us fantastic thrillers like Phobia and Ragini MMS starring Radhika Apte, Gaslight astonished me even more. Although Gaslight undervalues the audience’s intelligence by expecting them to solve the riddle when there isn’t actually one, I agree that it will be challenging to match the level. Well, the final 20 minutes and the climax bring the movie back to life, but it’s too late. Not to mention that getting to that height requires 1.5 hours of sitting. The movie opens with Misha (Sara Ali Khan),...

Gaslight REVIEW: Sara Ali Khan, Vikrant Massey, Chitrangda Singh starrer is a decent watch

Director: Pawan Kripalani Star Cast: Sara Ali Khan, Vikrant Massey, Chitrangda Singh, Rahul Dev Platform: Disney+ Hostar Bollywood Bubble ratings: 2.5/5 stars Gaslight Movie REVIEW: Gaslight starring Sara Ali Khan, Vikrant Massey and Chitrangda Singh is a suspense thriller with a touch of horror. I went to watch the movie with a clean slate, with zero expectations. Surprisingly, the movie wasn’t as bad as one would hope. There are a few hits and misses but Gaslight is a decent film to watch and a brave attempt to make a psychological thriller. Nevertheless, it doesn’t have a lasting effect on you as there are no scenes that impact you. Also, just a thought, whenever I watch a horror movie, I always wonder why don’t people switch on the lights. I mean if you’re trying to figure out who is standing in front of you, switch on the goddamn lights. There’s a scene in the movie when Sara experiences something and then after calling people, she tells them that she saw someone there. I mean hello, why would that supposed ghost or spirit still be standing for you? It is quite funny. Well, you’d be seeing quite a few scenes that will baffle you for sure. Drawbacks: First, the story of Gaslight is very predictable. The horror is a dud and it will not even startle you. Considering that he wanted to make it look like a horror movie, we get to see all the typical elements like the lead roaming alone in the mansion at night, people not turning on the lights and sudden sound effects. Well,...

Gaslight Movie Review: Clichés In Sara Ali Khan Starrer Don’t Let You Look Beyond Stereotypical Troops

Gaslight Movie Review Rating: Star Cast: Sara Ali Khan, Chitrangda Singh, Vikrant Massey, Akshay Oberoi, Rahul Dev, and ensemble. Director: Pavan Kirpalani. ( Photo Credit – Poster from Gaslight ) What’s Good: DOP Rahul Dharuman is trying to create fresh visuals with restrictions. Vikrant Massey is trying to make this all look fresh. What’s Bad: The same old blueprint that makes things supremely predictable. Loo Break: If you have seen enough Whodunits, you have solved a big mystery initially. Take one whenever until the final 10 minutes. Watch or Not?: If you do not have any other option and want to find some merit in a movie directed by a filmmaker who also has Phobia in his filmography, this one is a good exercise. Language: Hindi (with subtitles). Available On: disney+ Hotstar. Runtime: 111 Minutes User Rating: Meesha (Sara), an estranged daughter, returns to her King father after he writes a letter to her requesting a return. On her arrival, she is welcomed by her stepmother, who has her motives. After a few spooky turns of events and her father in no sight, Meesha begins to smell foul play. ( Photo Credit – Still from Gaslight ) Gaslight Movie Review: Script Analysis As Sriram Raghavan through Gaslight, written by Pavan Kirpalani and Neha Sharma (not the actor), walks on the same path that has been taken by many that came before it. There is no wrong in doing so. Have as many stereotypical troops as you want, but the idea is to justify them with newness. But if your ...
