Germany World Cup Squad: How Mario Gotze's 2022 performances have earned him shock call up for Qatar after five

Germany coach Hansi Flick saw his 2022 FIFA World Cup plans disrupted by injuries and the former Bayern Munich head coach opted for a shock move in response. Key names Timo Werner and Marco Reus saw their chances of heading to Qatar wrecked by injury, with rising star Florian Wirtz also ruled out. Those absences have impacted Flick's selection in his final 26-man squad, which was announced on November 10, with veteran midfielder Mario Gotze the big surprise call up. Gotze's extra-time winner in the 2014 World Cup final is one of the most iconic moments in German football history, but the forward has been left out in the cold for the national side since 2017, but now he is back. MORE: Mario Gotze 2022 performances Gotze's shock inclusion in the squad is just reward for a return to form this year back in the Bundesliga. After enjoying something of a career revival with Dutch side PSV since 2020, Gotze opted to return to Germany in the summer, with a switch to Eintracht Frankfurt. Coach Oliver Glasner has placed his faith in Gotze as an experienced star in his side, with the playmaker making 14 starts in 14 Bundesliga games so far this season. Despite only netting twice for his new side, Gotze's consistency has clearly brought him back to Flick's attention, with the fourth-highest statistics for goal creating action in the Bundesliga this season, amongst German players. Germany World Cup squad list for fixtures against Spain, Costa Rica and Japan

Germany have begun their World Cup in Qatar with a defeat against Japan and a draw with Spain. The four-time world champions go into the World Cup with Hansi Flick at the helm — a coach who won the treble with Bayern Munich in 2020. However, Germany had won just one of their last seven matches before the competition, which also included a 1-0 home defeat by Hungary and a 3-3 draw against England. Jamal Musiala will certainly be a player to watch at the World Cup and has been in fine form at club level, scoring eight goals and assisting six times during 16 matches in all competitions for Bayern. Flick will likely pair youth with experience, with 33-year-old Thomas Muller still a key part of this Germany set-up. World Cup 2022: Midfielder Mario Gotze returns to Germany squad for first time in five years

Bayern Munich teammates Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller will be playing in their fourth World Cup. Youssoufa Moukoko, Borussia Dortmund's 17-year-old striker, is also included. Moukoko and Werder Bremen's Niclas Fullkrug, who has scored 10 goals in 13 Bundesliga games this season, have both been called up for the first time. Defender Mats Hummel, who played at the last two tournaments, has been left out by manager Hansi Flick, while Dortmund captain Marco Reus misses out on another World Cup with an ankle injury. RB Leipzig's Timo Werner, formerly of Chelsea, is also out after suffering an ankle injury earlier this month that will keep him out until 2023. Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan and Chelsea forward Kai Havertz are included in the squad, along with West Ham defender Thilo Kehrer and Southampton centre-back Armel Bella-Kotchap. Germany kick off their World Cup campaign against Japan on 23 November before facing Spain and Costa Rica in Group E. They are set to play a warm-up game against Oman on 16 November. Germany Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona), Kevin Trapp (Eintracht Frankfurt) Defenders: Armel Bella-Kotchap (Southampton), Matthias Ginter (SC Freiburg), Christian Gunter (SC Freiburg), Thilo Kehrer (West Ham), Lukas Klostermann (RB Leipzig), David Raum (RB Leipzig), Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid), Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund), Niklas Sule (Borussia Dortmund) Midfielders: Julian Brandt (Borussia Dortmund), Leon G...

World Cup 2022 team guides part 18: Germany

The Germany team are at a historic low. Never before in the postwar era had they been eliminated before the quarter-finals in two major tournaments in a row. But the It would be helpful if the team played like a Mannschaft (which literally means team) again. The problem can’t be a lack of talent because the starting XI consists almost exclusively of players who have won the Champions League, and there are some exciting talents coming through. There are gaps though and it still remains to be seen who will play as the No 9: with Timo Werner injured the favourite to start is Kai Havertz, who is perhaps more comfortable playing behind a centre-forward. The coach, Hansi Flick, sprung a surprise when announcing his squad, including the 17-year-old Dortmund forward Youssoufa Moukoko, who will be an interesting option from the bench. Mario Götze, now at Eintracht Frankfurt, is also travelling to Qatar. There are some problems at full-back but the biggest issue is in central midfield. Joshua Kimmich is a tremendous distributor of the ball but has come under increasing pressure because of a perceived weakness in “ Zweikampf” (challenges/tackles). Thank you for your feedback. Philipp Lahm has told him to “work on his defensive tackling” while Markus Babbel thinks he lacks “tactical discipline”. Sami Khedira has said he does not have enough “tactical maturity”. How Hansi Flick will put together the midfield (4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1) is therefore the big question heading into the Ilkay Gündog...
