‘Ghadi’: Busan Review – The Hollywood Reporter

A teacher in a provincial Lebanese town is forced to face off with his intolerant neighbors over forcibly removing his Down syndrome son to an institution in Ghadi. As a film, visual artist and filmmaker Amin Dora’s feature debut doesn’t have a mental capacity much greater than its title character, but Dora’s extremely gentle satire about bigotry, redemption, faith and acceptance has the kind of sweet nature that helps it pull off its ridiculous premise. Ghadi is the kind of movie that flirts with disaster at the DNA level but thankfully manages to rise above its potential for discomfort, embarrassment or worse. The New Currents entry at Busan is also a blessedly apolitical comedy from Lebanon’s fledgling film industry that should generate a healthy dose of festival interest. Limited release in overseas urban markets isn’t out of the question for creative distributors, particularly in the run up to awards season. Leba (screenwriter Georges Khabbaz) is a quiet teacher that overcame a stutter in childhood and the scorn of his nemesis Gerard to marry the beautiful Lara ( Lara Rain, so underwritten as to be nearly invisible) and settle into a comfortable life in El Mshakkal. He has two daughters, and finally a son, Ghadi ( Emmanuel Khariallah), with Down’s. Ghadi spends most of his days sitting in the window like Leba did growing up, much to the chagrin of nosy, gossipy neighbors that have all manner of insult to describe the boy with. When they present Leba with a petition to...

The Great Soul: Gandhi the Father of India, Gandhi the Misogynist, and Gandhi the Racist – CIW REPORTS

by Tanya A. (all photos her credit) Gandhi the Memorial: History and Construction Statue of Gandhi Located on a triangular island along Massachusetts Avenue in the nation’s capital sits a statue of Mohandas K. Gandhi, commonly remembered as the Father of India due to his contributions to the Indian fight for independence from the United Kingdom. The statue is located in front of the Indian embassy and is meant to be a tribute to a historically admired figure. However, this memorial also highlights some great controversies surrounding Mohandas Gandhi. The history behind the memorial celebrates the increasing Indian population in the United States. Because the Indian immigrant population in America has increased tenfold in the last 40 years, it seems fitting that the presence of this vibrant community would be memorialized in the nation’s capital. Inscribed on the back of the pedestal are the words “A GIFT FROM THE PEOPLE OF INDIA AND THE INDIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY”, highlighting the importance of this memorial to the thriving Indian-American population. In fact, Indian-Americans originally requested this memorial, which was supported by a bill in Congress and ultimately signed by President Bill Clinton in 1999. Gandhi statues in America aren’t new; Indian-Americans have been successful in advocating for such statues in San Francisco, New York City, Houston, Atlanta, and other metropolitan hubs. However, because of DC’s unique significance as the capital of the nation, this p...

Mohandas Gandhi

Early Life Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar, in the present-day Indian state of Gujarat. His father was the dewan (chief minister) of Porbandar; his deeply religious mother was a devoted practitioner of Vaishnavism (worship of the Hindu god Vishnu), influenced by Jainism, an ascetic religion governed by tenets of self-discipline and nonviolence. At the age of 19, Mohandas left home to study law in London at the Inner Temple, one of the city’s four law colleges. Upon returning to India in mid-1891, he set up a law practice in Bombay, but met with little success. He soon accepted a position with an Indian firm that sent him to its office in South Africa. Along with his wife, Kasturbai, and their children, Gandhi remained in South Africa for nearly 20 years. Did you know? In the famous Salt March of April-May 1930, thousands of Indians followed Gandhi from Ahmadabad to the Arabian Sea. The march resulted in the arrest of nearly 60,000 people, including Gandhi himself. Gandhi was appalled by the discrimination he experienced as an Indian immigrant in South Africa. When a European magistrate in Durban asked him to take off his turban, he refused and left the courtroom. On a train voyage to Pretoria, he was thrown out of a first-class railway compartment and beaten up by a white stagecoach driver after refusing to give up his seat for a European passenger. That train journey served as a turning point for Gandhi, and he soon began developing an...

Nathuram Godse: The Story Of The Man Who Killed Gandhi

Mondadori Portfolio via Getty Images Mug shot of Nathuram Godse, the man who killed Gandhi. May 12, 1948. By the late 1940s, Mahatma Gandhi was an icon both in his native India and across the globe for his activism in working toward freeing his country from British colonial rule. His nonviolent ideals and leadership of the Indian Independence movement had gained him hundreds of thousands of devoted followers. But some of his beliefs also gained him opponents — and Nathuram Godse, the man who killed Gandhi, was ultimately the most zealous opponent of them all. Late in the afternoon of Jan. 30, 1948, Nathuram Godse walked up to Gandhi before a prayer service in New Delhi and shot him three times in the chest. With that, the great leader was dead, but the infamy of the man who killed Gandhi lives on to this day. The Early Life Of Nathuram Godse, The Man Who Killed Gandhi Nathuram Godse Because only his sister had survived, his parents believed that their male children were cursed, with the only way to get rid of the curse was to raise their next son as a girl. So when Godse was born, he was named Ramchandra, his nose was pierced so he could wear a nose ring, and he was raised as a girl. His name was shortened to “Ram” and his parents began to call him “Nathuram” which means “Ram who wears a nose ring.” Finally, after his younger brother was born, his parents began to raise him as a boy. As a child, his family believed that he had special oracular powers. He would sit in front...
