Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore

• • • • • Introduction to Gitanjali You may think that you consume poetry consciously but there may come along a book, like Gitanjali, where poetry will consume you, wholly, making you feel both lost and found, leaving you with a gratified feeling. It’s with a feeling of reverence and fondness that I attempt at writing about this book. This book is one that I don’t want to view from a reviewer’s lens. Though this post may be tagged under the category of a book review, let me be clear that this is not a book review. This is more like a childlike joy of sharing a found treasure with friends. This is exactly that. Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali is a treasure to be shared and enjoyed, consumed and let be consumed, discussed in platforms and yet relished in silence. Written by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, Gitanjali (which translates to “Song Offerings”) is a collection of translated poems of Tagore’s collection of Bengali poems titled Gitanjali. Well, the Bengali collection had 157 poems while the English translated collection has only 103 poems. The collection of poems captures the conversations of the poet with God in its profoundness even while keeping the language simple. It’s the simplicity in which Tagore brings out hope and the possibility to have conversations with God that makes it extraordinarily beautiful. The poet Rabindranath Tagore won the Nobel Prize for Literature for Gitanjali in the year 1913 which put Indian Literature in high regard across the worl...

60 Summary

Paragraph 1 Tagore’s “60” is a prose poem, so it uses paragraphs in place of poetic stanzas. The first paragraph begins with the line: “On the seashore of endless worlds children meet.” Based on the phrase “endless worlds,” one can see that this poem may have some metaphysical, or supernatural, qualities. The idea of endless worlds suggests a universal or infinite quality of some sort. In addition, Tagore introduces the image of a seashore in this sentence. He could be talking about an actual seashore, but the metaphysical context suggests that Tagore is talking about a symbolic one. A symbol is a physical object, action, or gesture that also represents an abstract concept, without losing its original identity. Symbols appear in literature in one of two ways. They can be local symbols, meaning that their symbolism is only relevant within the context of a specific literary work. They can also be universal symbols, meaning that their significance is based on traditional associations that are widely recognized, regardless of context. In “60,” the symbols are universal. Tagore is talking about a seashore, which is the opposite of the sea. The sea traditionally represents infinity—an idea that Tagore has already suggested with “endless worlds.” Following this line of thinking, the opposite of infinity, or heaven, is the mortal, human world. So, the seashore could represent this human world. The next line addresses the idea of infinity directly: “The infinite sky is motionless o...

Gitanjali Poem 12 Summary and Analysis

This lyric treats the theme of a mystical quest for God. But God can be found within oneself. The journey that the poet's soul takes is a long journey He has started out with the first ray of the sun and travelling through various worlds has left impressions on many stars and planets. Then Tagore says that as the musician's creation of a simple harmony is the result of a long, arduous-process, the journey to the most distant place turns out to be that to the place nearest to oneself. Tagore says that he has looked everywhere with his eyes until finally he closes his eyes and finds that God is there. Everyone cries and questions 'O' where are you God and this cry melts into the tears of a thousand streams and then finds that God is assurance that He is present everywhere floods the world. God is everything and everywhere. Tagore in this lyric makes a mystical journey to find God and then finds that God resides within oneself. This is conveyed in a very striking manner. The human soul searching for God is presented in terms of a traveller, voyaging through the universe, starting from the time of creation, with the sun's first dawn, and then various stars and planets. It is a long, arduous journey. Then Tagore rises a beautiful metaphor that of a musician's hard labour to create a simple tune, to show how man labourers hard in search of God only to find that God dwells within himself. Finally, after looking all over the place, searching over God. the poet realizes that God is...

Gitanjali Poem no. 5

In this lyric the poet prays to God, that he be allowed to sit by God's side and thus be granted a moment of quiet and rest, He shall finish the work that he has left, if he could be with God. He says that if he is unable to see God then he becomes restless and his heart loses all peace and rest. At times like this the poet feels that his work is an endless drudgery without any meaning and he is caught in a sea of labour and hard work. The poet feels that summer has arrived because he can hear the soft sounds of the summer in the buzzing of bees at the edge of the groove where flowers have bloomed, in the manner of the kings minstrels singing at his court. This time, the onset of summer is a time to sit quietly, facing God and in the divine peace enveloping all nature sing the praise and glory of God and pledge oneself to the maker. The lyric here is a prayer to God where the poet wishes to take leave from his day to day work and take respite from it in close communion from God. There is an equation between God and Nature. The poets longing to be near God is due to two reasons, one, the work that he does becomes a hard, endless labour if he stays away from God's sight for too long and, two, summer has come, he can feel the soft and delicate sounds of nature and can have the bees buzzing near the groove that has flowered like kings minstrels and such a time, a time of beautiful, silent leisure, is the time to be with God, to face God and sing of one's pledge of God. Thus, T...

Gitanjali Poem no. 2

The poet says that he is inspired by God to write poetry and to sing it. This makes the poet very happy, he feels as if his heart would break, as it is full of pride that God had inspired him. He then looks towards God and re sheds fears of joy and happiness. This results in dispersing all the discordant and harsh elements in the poet's life and it is replaced by one sweet, melodious harmony. The poet's love for God swells and soars like a bird soaring over the sea. The poet knows and understands that God is pleased by his songs and only as a singer can he come into God's presence. His song reaches far and wide but he himself could never reach God, he can only hope to touch God's feet by the edge of his far reaching song. The joy of singing fills the poet with the ecstasy that makes him drunk and forget himself and forgetting that he is a mere servant begins to call God his master, his friend. In this poem, Tagore claims that God is the inspiration behind his songs. He is a poet only because of divine command. It is as though God has chosen him and this fills his heart with such pride that it seems it would break. Tagore experiences a mystic joy in this revelation and his life becomes one of harmony and sweet melody. All harshness and dissonance have disappeared from it. The divine inspiration he receives fires him to transcend mortal bounds and, with his poetry which so pleases God he can touch God. The implication here is that poetry in itself is a lofty calling. The poe...

Gitanjali Poem 18 Summary and Analysis

Here, is a continuation of the same theme from the previous poem. However, here, the beloved who was earlier waiting for her lover is un-sure if he will come or not and the mood become gloomy. Tagore says that dark clouds have gathered, one on top of another and the day has darkened. At this he cries out to God as to why He was making his wait at the door thus, alone. He says that he was with other people during the day when every body was busy with their work, but night is dark and lonely, he was fervently longing for him and hoping that he would come. And then he says that if God did not show him his face or if He left him alone, then he didn't know how to pass the long, lonely and depressing days of the rainy season. Then the poet expresses how in his longing for God he keeps gazing at the sky which is dark and gloomy and his heart cries as the wind, mingling with the sound of wind. In continuation from the previous poem the poem is written following the traditional Indian poetry where the poet is the beloved waiting for God, the lover. Here the poet talks of the sadness and gloom because God has tailed to come and they have not been united. At this failure he feels a lot of pain and complains to God like a woman complaining to her lover Tagore compares his wretched plight to that of a beloved standing at the door waiting and feeling scared and lonely as the day was darkening with clouds and it is no longer the busy time of the day with everybody at work. The dark lonel...
