India ranked 107 on hunger index, government alleges bias

NEW DELHI: The Global Hunger Index 2022 ranked India at 107 out of 121 countries with a score of 29.1. In Asia, Afghanistan with a rank of 109 is the only country behind India while Pakistan (99), Bangladesh (84), Nepal (81) and Sri Lanka (64) have all fared better than India. In 2021, India was ranked 101 out of 116 countries on the GHI and was placed at 94 in 2020. The government rejected the findings, saying the index suffers from serious methodological issues and is an "erroneous measure" of hunger. In a statement, the ministry of women and child development said, "A consistent effort is yet again visible to taint India's image as a nation that does not fulfil the food security and nutritional requirements of its population. Misinformation seems to be the hallmark of the annually released index." According to the report, GHI scores are based on the values of four component indicators: undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting and child mortality. India's child stunting rate was 35.5% in 2017-21. Undernourishment prevalence rose in India from 14.8% in 2013-2015 to 16.3% in 2019-2021 and child wasting got worse from 15.1% in 2012-16 to 19.3% in 2017-21, it said. India, however, noted improvement in two parameters of child stunting from 38.7% in 2012-16 to 35.5% in 2017-21 and child mortality from 4.6% in 2014 to 3.3% in 2020. Researchers investigated the factors that contributed to a decline in stunting in four states between 2006 and 2016 - Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, ...

Global Multidimensional Poverty Index 2022

Multidimensional Poverty Index Report 2022 The 2022 Multidimensional Poverty Index Report "Unpacking deprivation bundles to reduce multidimensional poverty" finds that reducing poverty at scale is possible and unveils new 'poverty profiles' that can offer a breakthrough in development efforts to tackle the interlinked aspects of poverty. The report identifies a series of 'deprivation bundles' -- recurring patterns of poverty -- that commonly impact those who live in multidimensional poverty across the world. The data are used to identify the poverty profiles that are more common in certain places. This is a crucial step in designing strategies that address multiple aspects of poverty at the same time. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic and the current cost-of-living crisis are accounted for, the data shows that 1.2 billion people in 111 developing countries live in acute multidimensional poverty. This is nearly double the number who are seen as poor when poverty is defined as living on less than $1.90 per day.

Understand Global Hunger Index

The Global Hunger Index was in news in India recently as the country was ranked 101 out of 116 countries in the 2021 index. With a score of 27.5, the index classifies the hunger situation in India as ‘serious’. India was ranked 94 out of 101 countries in 2020. But what does the Global Hunger Index score and ranking signify? And what does this fall in India’s ranking suggest? Global Hunger Index The Global Hunger Index measures and tracks hunger at the global, regional, and national levels. It uses data from various US and other multilateral agencies to compute scores for all the countries. The GHI is comprised of four indicators across three dimensions. These are: Dimensions: • Child mortality • Under-five mortality rate is the indicator used to calculate the score for this dimension • Inadequate food supply • Undernourishment is the indicator used to calculate the score for this dimension. Undernourishment score refers to the population whose caloric intake is insufficient (and hence considered undernourished) • Child undernutrition • Child wasting – the share of children (age < 5) who have a low weight for their height • Child stunting – the share of children (age < 5) who have a low height for their age Data sources The 2021 GHI uses the average of data from 2018 to 2020 from FAO to calculate the proportion of undernourished people in a country. It uses the latest available data from 2016 to 2020 from UNICEF on child wasting and child stunting and takes the data on chil...
