Gold Review: Zac Efron Gives a Blistering Performance in Desert Drama – IndieWire

A single, bare tree interrupts the vast emptiness of the indeterminate desert landscape where “ Efron gives his all to the depiction of a deadly waiting game, delivering a stark, staggering performance in a film peppered with several moments of genuine intrigue. Overall, however, “Gold,” like its title, does little to stand out in a crowd (it’s the 25th film to use the word as its title, according to IMDb), so committed to its stripped-down style of storytelling and monotonous sepia color scheme that there’s little left for the audience to connect with, leaving us parched for something to focus on besides the purulent third-degree sunburn on Efron’s face. Unlike “Godot,” Efron lacks the Vladimir to his Estragon, with nothing but reptiles, flies, and the threat of rabid dogs to keep him company. That is, unless you count the giant nugget of gold he’s guarding, which takes on a life of its own and keeps him largely entertained as he bides his time in the punishing desert. “Gold” is set in a vaguely post-apocalyptic future “not far from now,” where the few people that are left are jaded, hungry, and coated in dirt from head to toe. When we meet Efron, he’s already in shambles, limping off a train he’s freight-hopped to a dusty town in the middle of nowhere. He’s planning to catch a ride to a place called “The Compound,” where a potential job doing hard labor awaits. While en route with a nameless churlish local (played by Australian actor Efron volunteers to stay and guard th...

'Gold' Ending, Explained: Who Finally Gets To Keep The Enormous Gold Nugget?

The survival horror drama film “Gold” marks the directorial debut of Australian actor-director Anthony Hayes. It is about two unknown men who travel towards an undisclosed location but come across an incident that changes their life completely. Though the film is set in the near future, the location or the place where the lead characters are or travel to is not mentioned in the narrative. “Gold” does fine enough if watched casually, but its glaring superficiality becomes clearer with more thoughts put into it, and its un-excitingly bare-bone plot trying to talk about the ugliness of human greed does not provide much joy either. ‘Gold’ Plot Summary: What Is The Film About? The film sets its place of unfolding at first, with grainy, dusty desert landscapes with barren trees, and a text on the screen calls it “some time, someplace, not far from now.” An unnamed man, played by Zac Efron (and therefore will be referred to by the actor’s name as the characters in the film remain unnamed), is seen traveling in a goods train compartment, eating away a piece of bread. At the other end of the compartment is a woman and her baby, both hungrily looking at the food. This seems to warm Efron’s heart, and he offers the rest of the bread to her before getting down at his station. The place is a run-down outpost but seemingly serves as a connection point to an area called The Compound, where Efron’s character plans to go. He asks around for a man who is supposed to drive him to the place, ...

‘Gold’ movie review: Alphonse Puthren

Tastes evolve, trends change, and trendsetters of yore sometimes end up playing catch-up. Bereft of ideas to inject some novelty, they may even repeat the tried and tested. This seems to be the case for filmmaker Alphonse Puthren with Gold, which comes seven years after Premam. Glimmers of his craft appear once in a while, but when they disappear, one is left wondering how someone who had such an understanding of the audience’s pulse, could get it so wrong this time. Gold, just like Puthren’s debut Neram, happens over a short period of four days. Joshi (Prithviraj Sukumaran) finds an abandoned vehicle filled with a consignment of portable speakers at the entrance of his house. The driver is nowhere to be found, and he has no way of getting his newly-delivered car inside the compound. Unni (Shammi Thilakan), the filthy rich owner of the consignment — which is not what it appears to be — is looking for the same, while the police are also facing a situation similar to Joshi’s. Storyline: Joshi finds an abandoned vehicle filled with a consignment of portable speakers at the entrance of his house, which kickstarts a series of events It is quite the mix that could have created an entertaining comedy of errors on screen. Unfortunately, that is not how it turns out. On the surface, almost every element that can make up an Alphonse Puthren film is present, right from the deft editing by the filmmaker himself, the many references and overlay captions, to Rajesh Murugesan’s high-temp...

Every Body movie review & film summary (2023)

"Every Body" is a moving, fascinating look at a too-often-ignored subset of the world's population, filled with empathy and understanding but also a cool, analytical anger about what history has put them through. The subject is intersex people, the slightly-more-than one percent of individuals who were born with a condition that complicated the state's ability to identify them with one of the only two options listed on hospital paperwork: female or male. As the movie explains, there are many variants of intersex people, born with atypical chromosomes or sex characteristics and not clearly male or female. There are those whose genitals were malformed or damaged by genetics or other external factors (including doctor's mistakes, a scenario touched on in "Every Body"); those who might have ambiguous genitals or undescended testicles that are initially mistaken for ovaries; and those who might appear male on the outside but have female reproductive parts, or the reverse. Such individuals are usually assigned a gender at birth that doesn't really reflect who they are in terms of body parts, and burdens them with the obligation to perform the assigned role for the rest of their lives no matter what they might personally want. However the individual ultimately chooses to identify can still be overruled by the state and by society as a whole (a dynamic that's playing out every day for trans people). Medical professionals would usually advise parents of intersex children that they ...
