GoodLuck Jerry Review: The Role Fits Janhvi Kapoor Like A Glove 2 and a half stars

Representing a marked change of scene for the three films old Janhvi Kapoor, GoodLuck Jerry strives in vain to capture the darkly comic core of the original Tamil film ( Kolamaavu Kokila, 2018). That isn't to say that the action comedy, streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, gets nothing right. One of the things that it definitely scores with is the casting of the female lead. The role fits Janhvi Kapoor like a glove. There is much else to like in GoodLuck Jerry, written by Pankaj Matta and directed by Siddharth Sen, but not all the happy tidings that the remake hopes for materialise in entirety. Some of the film's failings are rooted in the plot tweaks it resorts to by way of characters and situations. The crime caper sees the lead actress give the role of an ingenue caught in the dirty, dangerous world of drug smuggling her best shot. She carries the weight of the film on her shoulders with considerable panache. The film benefits from the effort that she puts and the support that she gets from the rest of the cast, made up mostly of actors who might not be stars yet but definitely deserve to be busy and popular. They go with the flow of this jaunty, jocular film that pits the innocence of a newbie in a dog-eat-dog business against the hard-nosed cynicism of toughened criminals. They deliver moments of mirth that help offset the effects of the stretches that do not work. Comparisons with what Nayanthara (a more mature actress than Janhvi in age and experience) did as Kokila are in...

‘Good Luck Jerry’ movie review: Too lucky to be true, this Janhvi Kapoor

‘Good Luck Jerry’ movie review: Too lucky to be true, this Janhvi Kapoor-starrer is good fun on the run One of those lucky actors who get the opportunity to learn on the job, Janhvi Kapoor performs better than in her previous outings, but it has more to do with the rich writing material than her skills as a performer July 29, 2022 05:17 pm | Updated 05:17 pm IST An official adaptation of Tamil hit Kolamaavu Kokila starring Nayanthara, Good Luck Jerry is the kind of film whose premise wins half the battle for it; an innocent-looking girl who gets sucked into the world of cocaine smuggling. The idea itself fills the mind with dramatic possibilities. Writer Pankaj Matter has tweaked the original story, but under the direction of Sidharth Sengupta, the transition from Tamil to Punjabi/Bihari milieu is smooth. Jaya or Jerry is a Bihari girl living in Punjab with her widowed mother Sharbati and sister Cherry. After her father’s death, her mother sells momos for a living and she works in a massage parlour, a job choice her mother doesn’t like. The three women are the centre of attraction in the neighourhood with men and boys eager to surrender to them on their terms, and writer Pankaj draws from the ironies of everyday life to create a series of situations that keep you interested. One day, Jerry and Cherry inadvertently cross the path of a drug cartel. When Jerry finds that her mother has cancer, she thinks of making a move towards a much more questionable profession. Her innoce...

Review

Express News Service A Bihari girl moves to Punjab and gets mixed up in the state’s nefarious drug trade. At first, Good Luck Jerry struck me as a retread of Udta Punjab (2016). With two major differences. One, Siddharth Sengupta’s film is a remake (of Kolamaavu Kokila, from 2018). Two, there’s nothing truly ‘nefarious’ or intimidating about these drug dealers. One guy, for instance, has a brace around his neck. Another looks like a doped-out cousin of Lovinder Singh Lucky. A third, despite facial similarities to a hardline Maharashtra politician, is quite the chicken at heart. A fourth talks in fish metaphors. Then there’s Jerry (Janhvi Kapoor). As mousy as her name, she’s the least conceivable as a drug runner—and thus the perfect fit for the job. When the film starts, Jerry is down on her luck, working as a masseuse and helping her mother (Mita Vashisht) and younger sister (Samta Sudiksha) sell momos out of their rundown home. “Only veg momos,” her mother declares proudly, parcelling them out in batches for assorted local northeastern to sell. The mix of migrant identities leads to a nice bit, where a racist joke elicits a prompt racist jibe. When her mother comes down with cancer, Jerry tries desperately to gather the treatment money. She’s eventually hired by Timmi (Jaswant Singh Dalal), a local gangster, who sees potential in the lone shy girl ferrying heroin packets in her tiffin box. As Jerry starts breaking sad, the film kicks into high gear. There are some funny ...

‘Good Luck Jerry’ Review: How well did Janhvi Kapoor Fair in this Black Comedy Genre?

A sick mother, a young sister, and a teenage girl who is forced to take responsibility for it all. ‘Good Luck Jerry’ is a story of a migrant family from Bihar, whose earner is no longer in this world. The movie is about the survival of the family of two girls and their mother. Directed by Siddharth Sengupta, ‘Good Luck Jerry’ has just been released on Disney+Hotstar on July 29th, 2022. Jhanvi Kapoor is playing the main character in the film. She could be seen along with actors like Mita Vashisht, Samta Sudiksha, Deepak Dobriyal, Sahil Mehta, Neeraj Sood, and Sushant Singh in the film. A black comedy by genre, ‘Good Luck Jerry’ is a Hindi remake of Nayanthara starrer, ‘Kolamavu Kokila’. There was a lot of potential for Jhanvi Kapoor in the film. But many of his dialogues do not seem convincing due to the forced 'Bihari' tone. There are some scenes in which Jhanvi has been quite impressive. But it is obvious that if the film is a remake, then it will be compared to the original. The character played by Nayantara in ‘Kolamavu Kokila’ came out very well on screen. On the other hand, Jhanvi's Jerry character does not come out that much in comparison. Jhanvi had famously said in an interview that the director, Siddharth Sengupta, had repeatedly asked her to practice the famous Bhojpuri song Lollipop Lagelu so that she could catch the elegance of the dialect. How effective this experiment has been, you will be the judge of that. But if we remove the comparison, then the work that...

Good Luck Jerry Has Janhvi Kapoor Doing Black Comedy — And It Falls Short

It's been more than a decade since Delhi Belly (2011), Hindi cinema's last great black comedy. The wait continues with Good Luck Jerry , a Punjab-based crime caper about a young woman who becomes a drug smuggler to pay for her mother's cancer treatment. It's never a good sign when your first reaction to a Hindi remake is to look up the detailed plot of the Tamil original (the Kolamaavu Kokila, made in 2018). Strangely enough, this film falters similarly to other modern capers like Kaalakandi (2018) and (2018). Despite an upbeat start, it loses the viewer in its mad dash to frame chaos as situational comedy. And unlike Ludo (2020) and Looop Lapeta (2022) – two recent streaming films that came the closest to genre success – Good Luck Jerry lacks the visual energy to paper over its glaring cracks. The setup is short and sweet. Jaya Kumari, a.k.a Jerry, is a Bihari migrant living in Patiala with her vegetable momo-selling mother and younger sister. Much to the chagrin of her family, Jerry works at a seedy massage parlour. When Jerry's mother is diagnosed with lung cancer, she chances upon a cocaine-smuggling business run by appropriately eccentric men. Under severe financial pressure, she takes up a job as a drug courier. It helps that the supplier, who doubles up as a local dhaba owner, is a Pankaj-Tripathi-ish gangster who nurtures a soft spot for Jerry. As the only female 'agent' in a notoriously patriarchal field and region, Jerry circumvents police scrutiny and becomes a ...

'Good Luck Jerry' review: Janhvi Kapoor

Chaos follows when a family in desperate need of money unluckily encounters drug lords. That is Good Luck Jerry in a nutshell. The humorous part of the film was successful, but the remainder of the plot was presented with a distinct lack of effort. It is a Hindi adaptation of the 2018 Tamil film Kolamaavu Kokila starring Nayanthara. The opening titles of the film feature animation depicting Jerry (Janhvi Kapoor) and her family moving from Darbhanga (Bihar) to Punjab. When she was little, her father died, and ever since, Sarbati (Mita Vasisth), her mother, has relied on selling momos to make ends meet. She has a younger sister named Cherry (Samta Sudiksha). Her mother disapproves of Jerry's employment at a massage parlour. The show-stealing Rinku (Deepak Dobriyal) is introduced immediately and is madly in love with Jerry. He occasionally offers light relief with his humour. The family appear to be doing well until they learn that Sarbati has stage 2 lung cancer. Jerry feels utterly disturbed and powerless in the face of the expensive treatment. Despite her best efforts, she has received no assistance. Jerry unintentionally becomes involved with drug dealer Timmy (Jaswant Singh Dalal) one day. She understands that perhaps working for him will enable her to make enough money for her mother's medical expenses. The movie's true plot, in which chaos breaks out, begins when she decides to quit the job after realising the major risks that are associated with it. The comedy-centric...
