New ways maps and AI keep communities safe and informed

With Google’s AI technology and mapping information, people and organizations all over the world can access helpful, reliable information needed to make progress toward tackling global challenges like climate change. At Search On today, we’re sharing new mapping features that help keep communities safer, more sustainable, and discoverable — no matter where they are in the world. Introducing the wildfire layer on Google Maps With climate change, wildfires are growing increasingly more common in many parts of the world. Last year, we launched a Building on this, we’re now bringing all of Google’s wildfire information together and launching it globally with a new layer on Google Maps. With the wildfire layer, you can get up-to-date details about multiple fires at once, allowing you to make quick, informed decisions during times of emergency. Just tap on a fire to see available links to resources from local governments, such as emergency websites, phone numbers for help and information, and evacuation details. When available, you can also see important details about the fire, such as its containment, how many acres have burned, and when all this information was last reported. The wildfires layer will start to roll out globally this week on Android, with iOS and desktop coming in October, and will display most major fires that cause significant evacuations. In the U.S., the layer will expand to include more fires thanks to data from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). ...

These 2 new Google Maps AI features will change the way I use the app

That’s not to say the Immersive View update isn’t as exciting. Google uses AI to fuse billions of aerial images and create three-dimensional views of the world. The result is a brand new way to explore tourist attractions worldwide before you even get there. Immersive View lets you see the neighborhood, spot nearby restaurants, and check out a specific location in various weather and traffic conditions. Google is now expanding the feature to more than 500 landmarks around the world. The list includes four new cities: Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence, and Venice. But it’ll be a while until every corner of Google Maps gets Immersive View coverage. How glanceable directions work More interesting and useful to me is the release of glanceable directions. This is another feature we knew Google was working on. With glanceable directions, you get real-time navigation on your lock screen or in the route overview. This is a feature that was previously available only after starting the navigation process. I don’t just I’d just enter the destination and then keep checking the screen to see whether I’m where I’m supposed to be. Glanceable directions will make this process even easier. The feature will be available globally this month for walking, cycling, and driving. It’ll come to Android as well, not just iPhone, of course. Google does say you have to opt-in to get the feature, which means that, yes, your location will be shared with Google at all times. But sharing your location is the o...

Redefining what a map can be with new information and AI

Sixteen years ago, many of us held a printout of directions in one hand and the steering wheel in the other to get around— without information about the traffic along your route or details about when your favorite restaurant was open. Since then, we’ve been pushing the boundaries of what a map can do, propelled by the latest machine learning. This year, we’re on track to bring over 100 AI-powered improvements to Google Maps so you can get the most accurate, up-to-date information about the world, exactly when you need it. Here's a snapshot of how we're using AI to make Maps work better for you with a number of updates coming this year. Navigate indoors with Live View We all know that awkward moment when you're walking in the opposite direction of where you want to go — Live View uses AR cues to avoid just that. Live View is powered by a technology called If you’re catching a plane or train, Live View can help you find the nearest elevator and escalators, your gate, platform, baggage claim, check-in counters, ticket office, restrooms, ATMs and more. Arrows and accompanying directions will point you the right way. And if you need to pick something up from the mall, use Live View to see what floor a store is on and how to get there so you can get in and out in a snap. Indoor Live View is live now on Android and iOS in a number of malls in Chicago, Long Island, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle. It starts rolling out in the coming months in select airpo...

Google AI Push Comes With Enhanced Features For Search, Maps

• Google will expand Bard into 180 countries with more than 40 languages. • The company announced the coming Pixel 7a, and Android 14 operating system. • Immersive view map improvements and AI-driven photo editing were also announced. Google’s Bard chatbot got the bulk of the attention at the conference, with immediate support for the Korean and Japanese languages. The company said it would soon roll out the AI competitor to Microsoft’s ( The day before, Engadget provided a preview of Google’s Search Generative Experience, which will rival Bing’s new search engine. Google also announced the launch of its Pixel tablet a day ahead of the developer conference and the company revealed more details on its Pixel 7a handset at I/O 2023 which Media Peanut leaked. Google Map Routes Get Immersive, Photo Editing Goes AI Google Maps is set to build on its Immersive View format launched last year, which will provide users with a more detailed view when they look for directions in selected cities. Immersive view will allow users to see details on traffic, weather, bike lanes, and parking.

How to use Google Maps Immersive View

Google Maps is probably the most popular navigation app out there, thanks to its accurate routing, live traffic, community reviews, and more. Features like Street View and Live View also bring a whole new dimension to the app, giving users a closer street-level look at a particular environment. But now, Google Maps has taken things up another notch with the new Immersive View feature, which helps put things into perspective even more. 2. Search for a city such as New York, San Francisco, or Tokyo where Immersive View is available. 3. On the map, tap one of the icons for a landmark. For this example, I'm choosing the Seattle Space Needle. 4. In the location details, you'll see an "Immersive View" card ahead of other photos of the landmark. Tap on the card. 5. Once Immersive View loads, you can zoom in and out, double-tap to move the map toward an area, or tap a place of interest to zoom in and get more details. On many locations, tapping the bubble with a circular arrow will take you into Street View. (Image credit: Android Central) 7. Select locations will allow you to view the inside of buildings and establishments. For this example, I am choosing the Seafood Bar in Amsterdam. When viewing a location that supports this feature, you'll also see the Immersive View card in the location details that will open the view (as seen in the first few steps). When viewing supported locations from within Immersive View, you will see a bubble with a circle around it (that does not have...

Google is using AI to update business hours that are out of date on Google Maps

Google’s post says that its AI looks at even more data if it determines the hours should be updated. It’ll take into account information from the business’s website and can even scrape street view images (which may show business hours signs) to try and figure out when the business is open. Google says it’ll also check with actual humans, including Google Maps users and business owners, to verify the AI’s predictions — the company says it will even use Duplex in some countries to ask businesses about their hours directly. While it’s no surprise that Google’s using AI for these problems, it is interesting to see how many interlocking systems are involved. There’s computer vision, pattern recognition in location trends, and analyzing data about similar locations (which, of course, also involves figuring out what the similar locations even are), all to quietly try and keep up with how often businesses change their hours and make sure it knows the speed limit on certain stretches of road.
