GoPro Hero 11 Mini Review: Smaller, Lighter, But Harder to Use

When GoPro announced the new The GoPro Hero 11 Mini is essentially a set of compromises to save size and weight over the full-size GoPro. For the right kind of user, these compromises will be well worth the savings in weight, size, and price. For most of us though, the Hero 11 Black remains the GoPro to get. GoPro Shrinkage The Hero 11 Mini is 13 percent smaller than the The Mini is technically about 4 mm thicker but the same height as the full-size Hero 11. Where it's smaller is the width, which is 20 mm less than the full-size camera. To save that space, GoPro got rid of all the screens on the Mini. This has the distinct advantage of making the Mini more rugged. The big screens on the Hero 11 Black are the most vulnerable points, and most of the destroyed GoPros I’ve seen usually have cracked screens or lenses. The Mini eliminates at least the possibility of this happening. There is technically a tiny LCD on top of the camera to show you things like the current shooting mode, but to frame your shots and delve into settings, the Mini requires the GoPro Quik app. Photograph: GoPro Until the Mini arrived, I’ll confess I had never really used the Quik app to set up my GoPro. Even the shots where I am not going to be monitoring them constantly—like when I’ve strapped the Hero 11 to the front of my paddleboard or surfboard—I still set up everything using the rear screen. The app works fine, and the transition from screen to app is easy—the app is mostly the same menus as you g...

Managing Editor Josh Goldman is a laptop expert and has been writing about and reviewing them since built-in Wi-Fi was an optional feature. He also covers almost anything connected to a PC, including keyboards, mice, USB-C docks and PC gaming accessories. In addition, he writes about cameras, including action cams and drones. And while he doesn't consider himself a gamer, he spends entirely too much time playing them. The Hero 11 Black, GoPro's new flagship camera, looks just like last year's Hero 10 Black except for the number change on the side. There's one big change on the inside, though, and that change enables a handful of features that will make the camera more attractive to everyone -- from pros and creators to casual users and even first-time GoPro buyers. Let's start with the biggest upgrade: The new image sensor. GoPro used an 8:7, 1/1.9-inch sensor. While the size increase improves quality some, it's more about how GoPro is using the full sensor for 27-megapixel photos and 5.3K-resolution video with an 8:7 aspect ratio. With a high-resolution 8:7 aspect ratio, one clip can be edited to 16:9, 4:3 or 1:1, or vertical video at 7:8, 3:4 or 9:16. That means whatever your social media platform of choice is -- YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok -- the single clip can be edited to meet your needs. What's even better is GoPro's Quik app makes the whole process painless. Plus, with all the extra resolution, you can crop in and still have good-looking results. The Hero ...

The GoPro HERO 11 Black brings a new, almost square sensor to the action camera game. Chris and Jordan get righteous, go totally tubular, and pull some sick moves on land and sea to find out if this GoPro is really a game changer. Are the upgrades worth adding one of these to your camera bag? Find out what they boys from Calgary think after testing GoPro's newest action camera. • • • • • • • • • • • GoPro HERO 11 Black sample photos from this episode Before buying a Gopro hero 11 it might be worth knowing that the desktop editing doesn't work and hasn't for some time! Don't take my word for it, go online and see for yourselves. Gopro have been fully aware of this problem for a couple of years but will happily sell you a new camera stating that the desktop editing needs Windows 11 to operate. I only found this problem after I had taken out a subscription and tried to edit my holiday footage on Windows 11 but couldn't. I went onto the Gopro site and found that the desktop software was no longer "Under developement" and they had "Moved on"! Gopro representatives have acknowledged the problem but not resolved it. This isn't a new problem, hundreds if not thousands of people must be affected by the problem judging by the hits. Editing on a phone isn't for me and I would have to upgrade so my camera is useless! It's a great camera but it's only half of the package. I'm a bit late in this, and in picking on this review just because it's the most recent camera review at the time o...

As usual, though, there are some extra shooting modes. SuperView is now available right up to 5K60/4K120 (previously 4K/60 was the max). Similarly, still images receive a boost from 23-megapixels up to 27. There’s also 10-bit color across the board. The shrewd among you will have spotted that this means there is a new sensor and it’s core to some of the other new features below. Despite the move up from 1 /2.3 to 1 /1.9 those extra megapixels don’t seem to have really translated to improved low light performance (accordingly there’s no such claim). Instead you have more pixels to play with. In fact, this new, taller sensor is what enables two of the main new features: First is 360-degree horizon lock in Linear mode (up to 5.3K/30). Horizon-leveling was already pretty good on the Hero 10, but now it’s absolute. If your activities involve a lot of tight corners or literal body spinning this can be used for creative effect. If, like me, you’re just prone to wonkily mounting your camera you can really just forget about all that now. Both DJI’s new Subscribe Please enter a valid email address Please select a newsletter By subscribing, you are agreeing to Engadget's The second, and probably bigger advantage to the taller sensor is the ability to record in “Full Frame.” This isn’t a camera mode per se – although it can be used as such if you like 8:7, 5.3K video. It’s more of a tool for shooting absolutely everything and then “punching out” the aspect ratio you want (or more than...

And you can shoot linear video with Horizon Lock, which means the camera can rotate 360 degrees but the video remains right-side up and level. However, I noticed significant motion blur when using Horizon Lock and HyperSmooth in low-l...
